What is the Newspapers In Education program?

Newspapers in Education is an international program that promotes the use of newspapers as progressive, instructional tools for the classroom. The newspaper is a textbook for real life.

NIE programs around the world are dedicated to building literacy by providing educational materials and newspapers to schools, colleges, youth detention centers and other non-school based education programs.

Over 950 newspapers across the United States and 23 countries worldwide have an NIE program. We want to make the one here in Central Illinois even more of a success.

The Journal Gazette & Times-Courier remains committed to improving educational standards by providing educators and students with a fun, interactive, academic program designed to enhance the learning environment at any grade level.

Here at the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier we feel that our newspapers are "Positively Part of the Classroom!"

With the program getting larger and larger each year and with so many school budget constraints that limit local educators we depend on local businesses and sponsors to help the program to be a success.

Call Robin Thompson, Journal Gazette & Times-Courier NIE Coordinator at (217) 238-6845 or email her at rthompson@jg-tc.com for more information.
