Jobless rate up in seven counties

Unemployment was up in seven of eight area counties in October, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The unemployment rate in Cumberland County dropped from 9.7 percent in September to 9.5 percent in October, IDES figures show. It was the only county in the area in which the jobless rate dropped.

The unemployment rate was up 8/10ths of a percent in both Moultrie and Shelby counties — the biggest jump in the area from september to October.

In south central Illinois, eight of 18 counties had unemployment rates of more than 10 percent in October.

Layoffs in the construction sector started in the fall with the completion of several projects. Retail hiring for the holiday season has been limited thus far, IDES officials said.

Job opportunities continued to be available in health care services, according to Dennis Hoffman, the IDES coordinator for the area who is based in Mt. Vernon.

Clark County is suffering from the highest unemployment rate in the 18-county south central region at 13.7 percent in October.

Area counties’ unemployment rates for October compared to September include:

-Clark: 13.7 percent in October, 13.1 percent in September.

- Coles: 9.5 percent in October, 9.1 percent in September.

- Cumberland: 9.5 percent in October, 9.7 percent in september.

- Douglas: 9.3 percent in October, 9.1 percent in September.

- Edgar: 11.2 percent in October, 10.7 percent in september.

- Effingham: 8.4 percent in October, 7.9 percent in September.

- Moultrie: 9.8 percent in October, 9.0 percent in September.

- Shelby: 10.8 percent in october, 10.0 percent in September.

Elsewhere, October unemployment rates include Decatur 12.7 percent, Champaign-Urbana 8.6 percent, Danville 12.1 percent, Springfield 8.2 percent and Bloomington-Normal 7.7 percent.

Who is the "African born messiah"? You can't be speaking of the President, since he was born in Hawaii. "

Why does Clark County's never-ending high unemployment rate not surprise anyone? There are no jobs there and pretty much everyone there lives in poverty (except for 1% of the population who controls all the money.) For those who are thinking of moving there, be prepared to pay higher property taxes and sales taxes. If you have teens who need work, McDonalds in Casey and Marshall is about the only place in Clark County where they're hiring. The temp employment agencies there are of no help. And if you're one who likes to keep tabs on the local government (especially the county government), be prepared to deal with people who cling to the "good ol' boy" way of doing things. Clark County - highest in obesity, heart diesease, and now, unemployemt. "

" The unemployment numbers only reflect those who are currently receiving unemployment benefits, or other benefits, such as food stamps welfare etc.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Do "Not" include in those figures, those who have exausted benefits, or those who have just fell off the radar, by not having any income.....The actual unemployment rate is closer to 17%.

look it up. "

" So I'm unemployed, from Clark County, and the factory where I worked closed while GEORGE W. BUSH was still the president. (as did many others) Not that I think it was his fault--but it's not Obama's either. Let's quit looking for someone to blame and look for a solution. "

" I agree with Dannyboy. The real un rate is much higher than the gov't declared rate.

College Mommy is one of the most sensible posters too. Solutions not blame help us move forward. Well done. "

" Kucinich: Afghans Want to be Saved from Us, Not by Us
WASHINGTON - December 2 - Following a speech on the Floor of the House of Representative, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement:

Why are we still in Afghanistan? Al-Qaeda has been routed. Our occupation fuels a Taliban insurgency. The more troops we send, the more resistance we meet. If we want to be truly secure, we need to redefine national security to include financial security. Yet America has record debt, skyrocketing unemployment, huge trade deficits, record business failures and foreclosures.

The people of Afghanistan dont want to be saved by us. They want to be saved from us. Our presence and our Predator drones kill countless innocents, creating more US enemies and destabilizing Pakistan. The US-created Karzai government is hopelessly corrupt and despised by the Afghan people. Our solution: Provide him with a high-level US minder which will make him even less legitimate. Another strategy: Buy or rent "friends" among would-be insurgents and give them guns and cash. But when the money runs out they shoot at U.S. soldiers. We've played all sides in Afghanistan and all the sides want us out. They do not want our presence, our control, our troops, our drones, our way of life. We are fighting the wrong war, in the wrong place at the wrong time. What part of "get out" do we not understand? "

" Kucinich: The War Is a Threat to Our National Security
WASHINGTON - December 3 - Following a speech on the Floor of the House of Representative, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement:

"America is in the fight of its life and that fight is not in Afghanistan -- its here. We are deeply in debt. Our GDP is down. Our manufacturing is down. Our savings are down. The value of the dollar is down. Our trade deficit is up. Business failures are up. Bankruptcies are up.

"The war is a threat to our national security. We'll spend over one $100 billion next year to bomb a nation of poor people while we reenergize the Taliban, destabilize Pakistan, deplete our army and put more of our soldiers' lives on the line. Meanwhile, back here in the USA, 15 million people are out of work. People are losing their jobs, their health care, their savings, their investments, and their retirement security. $13 trillion in bailouts for Wall Street, trillions for war; when are we going to start taking care of things here at home?" "
