St. Anthony's long-range success gives Trojans trouble

EFFINGHAM — Charleston boys’ basketball coach Trevor Doughty switched his team into a man-to-man defense with approximately three minutes remaining in the Trojans’ third place game against Effingham St. Anthony during Saturday’s St. Anthony Thanksgiving tournament.

Up until that point, Charleston had been playing a zone defense against the Bulldogs. St. Anthony continued to find success from behind the 3-point line against the zone (11 of 25 for the game), but the Trojans trailed by just five points with six minutes remaining in the game.

That’s when St. Anthony senior guard Taylor Worman drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to turn that five point Charleston deficit into an 11-point Bulldogs’ lead. Then Worman hit another 3-pointer. And another. His 12 points in the fourth quarter-all coming within about three minutes-pushed St. Anthony’s lead to 58-43 en route to the Bulldogs’ 66-48 win.

“He got loose right there at the end,” Doughty said about Worman. “I should have gone to man-to-man probably quicker, but inside I thought they would really take advantage as big as they are and as physical as they are.”

That physical nature inside for the Bulldogs comes from St. Anthony’s several tall post players. Ryan Schmitt, a 6-7 junior, scored 10 points and had six rebounds. Worman, who stands 6-foot-5 yet plays primarily the perimeter, had five rebounds to go with his game-high 22 points. Then there was the eight points and three rebounds from high-energy reserve forward Derek Rohlfing (6-foot-3). Which all told still fails to mention 6-foot-6 Ryan Baker and 6-foot-4 Paul Sudkamp, who combined for four more rebounds and a strong defensive presence in the post.

“We’ve just got to do a better job of going to the boards, and it comes down to being aggressive and slide over there,” Doughty said about rebounding out of a zone defense. “As big as they were and as strong as they were, they just came in there and made some plays. Now hopefully you’re not playing against 6-6, 6-7 and 6-5 all year, and for the most part we won’t.”

Charleston wasn’t the only team, however, making defensive adjustments because of the opposing team’s offense. St. Anthony switched from a 3-2 zone defense to a triangle-and-two after the Trojans had success attacking the basket.

Junior guard Joey Miller, an All-Tournament team selection, led the Trojans with 14 points with several coming on runners in the lane. Senior guard Brad Wheeler had 10 points and did most of his scoring around the basket.

“I thought we did a good job of attacking their zone, and eventually they had to get it out of because we did a good job,” Doughty said. “Where we ran into problems against it was when we weren’t very patient and we tried to hurry things too much.”

The learning curve didn’t end with trying to figure out the Bulldogs’ defensive adjustments. Doughty said playing against teams like St. Anthony and Breese Central, which both have several good post players that compliment their solid guard play, would only help the Trojans because it provided a high level of competition early in the season.

“I felt like overall the four games we had were tough games,” Doughty said about the tournament. “That should help us going into (conference play) because you’re playing against that competition. We just have to work and improve and get better.”
