Lincoln Log Cabin sets candlelight tours for Christmas

LERNA — Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site’s annual “Christmas Candlelight Tours” event is scheduled for Friday to give visitors a chance to see how 19th century Americans observed the holiday.

The event is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. and there will be no admission charge. Visitors will be able to tour the site by candle-lit paths.

According to information from the site, at the Lincoln cabin the family will gather around the hearth and share the evening socializing, as was common with many farm families after the busy harvest season, all the while continuing to stay busy spinning wool, knitting, and performing other small tasks.

The Sargent Farm area of the site will feature a celebration of the holiday with food and simple decorations and an emphasis on Christmas as a family holiday. Christmas as it’s known today was not widely celebrated on the Illinois prairie, and the Sargent family will represent a growing trend in the 19th century of those who chose to observe the holiday as a family affair.

Also, the local trio Motherlode will perform seasonal music in the site’s visitors’ center during the event.

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site features the last home of Abraham Lincoln’s father and stepmother, Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln. It is located eight miles south of Charleston.

More information is available by calling 345-1845 or online at www.lincolnlogcabin.org.
