CAT to present holiday show, 'Harlequin and the Green Christmas Gown'
CHARLESTON — The Charleston Alley Theatre will close its 19th season with a holiday comedy “Harlequin and the Green Christmas Gown,” beginning Dec. 4.
A comic tale, “Harlequin and The Green Christmas Gown” is in the classic commedia dell’arte tradition, with zany characters, crafty plots and plenty of slapstick.
“Harlequin and The Green Christmas Gown” is performed in the traditional Italian commedia dell’arte theatrical style, with lazzi (comic slapstick), improvisation and masks.
Through rehearsal, the cast created its own script from a detailed plot outline (scenario), inspired by the children’s book “Harlequin and the Green Dress” by Laura Frischetto, illustrated by Yoriko Ito.
In order to win the heart of his lady love, Harlequin, a scheming servant, sets in motion a chain of complicated and comical events, involving a green gown, mistaken identities at a holiday costume ball, sneaky servants, a pair of lovers, a miserly father and a bungling doctor.
Tim Travous plays the wiley servant Harlequin and Nicole Shoffstall is the object of his affection, Columbine. Dar’Keith Lofton plays the miserly father, Pantelone, and Sarah Mims is his lovesick daughter, Rosaura.
Rosaura’s handsome knight, Florindo, is played by Brendan Hughes and Matt Moran. Chris Aubrey plays Florindo’s greedy servant, Punch. D. Craig Banyai plays Pantelone’s friend, the bungling Dottore.
Arielle Starkey is Florindo’s henchman, Brighella; Marie Jozwiak and Samantha Banyai are the maids, Bertha and Olivia; and Brayden Shambo plays the page, Pedrolino. Tony Cox is Maestro Pomposo, the music director.
The production is under the direction of J.M. Hughes, the set and lights by Duke Bagger, music by Tony Cox, and costumes by J.M. Hughes.
“Harlequin and The Green Christmas Gown” will open at 7 p.m. Dec. 4. Additional performances will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 5, 11 and 12 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 and 13.
Tickets are $10 and reservations are available by calling 345-2287, or at the theater, 718 Monroe Ave., Charleston, one hour before curtain.
