Lake Land's CBI recognizes Irwin Telescopic Seating for development

MATTOON — Lake Land College’s Center for Business and Industry (CBI) recently recognized Irwin Telescopic Seating for its achievements in work force development, according to a press release.

The Altamont-based company has had an ongoing relationship with the CBI for its training needs. For several years, company employees in the maintenance and engineering departments have utilized Lake Land’s electrical and PLC courses and employees in the manufacturing department have studied areas such as welding, print reading and measurement.

More recently, the company came to the college because skilled workers are in short supply in the area. The company, which manufactures bleachers and seats for gymnasiums and auditoriums, wanted to upgrade employee’s skills to the specific needs of the industry.

The college provided skill specific assessment tests, which have helped the company determine employee training needs and reduce costs.

“We received advanced training through Lake Land College,” said Rusty Conner, vice president of operations. “When we called we always received first-class service.”

“Irwin is a true Central Illinois success story,” said Randy Strohl, CBI instructor. “The company continues to grow and is currently working on projects in Oklahoma City, Wichita and will soon be outfitting an arena in Toronto.”

In 2008, International Paper received the Workforce Development Award; Yargus Mfg. received the Critical Skills Development Award; and Stevens Industries received the Continuous Process Improvement Award.
