By CINDY TITUS
The Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for two awards that will be presented as part of the program at the Chamber Annual Dinner on Jan. 23, 2010.
The Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award has been presented by the Chamber each year since 1965. The criteria for judging each nominee are: (1) service to the community beyond the line of duty; (2) membership in civic and charitable organizations; (3) length of service over a number of years, which demonstrates a willingness to serve; (4) good character; and (5) identifiable contribution to the business community. Sheryl Snyder received the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award last year.
For the sixth year, the Chamber will recognize the “Small Business of the Year” at the Annual Dinner. This award is designed to honor a small business that has made a significant contribution to the local community and economy. It is intended to recognize a successful and growing business that has achieved its status through ingenuity and hard work.
The criteria for selection of the Small Business of the Year are: (1) member in good standing for the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce; (2) have 50 or fewer employees; (3) in operation at least two years; (4) demonstrated leadership and community responsibility; (5) positive customer relationships and satisfaction; and (5) business performance.
Mooney Motors of Charleston was the recipient of the Small Business of the Year Award in 2005, Porter Auto Body in 2006 and Gilbert, Metzger & Madigan, LLP in 2007, Pro-Mow Lawn Care in 2008 and Towne Square Jewelers was given the award last year.
Nomination forms for both awards are available at the Chamber office or by calling 345-7041. Nomination forms, including any supporting documentation, should be sent to the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 77, Charleston, IL 61920 or left in a sealed envelope at the Chamber office, 501 Jackson Avenue by the end of the day on Friday, Dec. 4.
Team Project Proposals are now being accepted for the Leadership Coles County Spring 2010 Class.
Leadership Coles County is the premier leadership development course in the area and is sponsored by the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce, and EIU’s Business Solutions Center.
The purpose of the program is to identify and motivate emerging leaders from the community and to develop their potential for civic, social, and professional leadership.
An important component of leadership is service — service to others, to organizations serving the community and to the community as a whole. Therefore, a key component of the Leadership Coles County program is the mandatory team project that class participants work on outside of class time.
To assist in identifying team projects that are relevant and integral to issues related to Coles County, the Chambers are asking area organizations and businesses, community representatives, leaders, and Leadership Alumni for suggestions for team projects for the Spring Class.
The timeline for completion of the projects is March 10 through April 28. The goal is to have short term projects with measurable outcomes and long term results. The criteria for the Team Projects are:
1. Projects must be short term and completed over the course of the five sessions.
2. Projects that have tangible or measurable results will be given first consideration.
3. Project outcomes must be able to be marketed and publicized.
4. Team members will present their idea, develop a plan of action and specify
anticipated outcomes at the onset of the project.
5. Team members will be given some time during class sessions to work on the project,
but are also expected to spend additional time outside of sessions working on the
project.
6. Written and oral presentations about the team projects will be presented to the full
class during the last session.
Project proposals need to be submitted by Feb. 12 for review. Proposal forms are available from the Charleston Chamber office at 501 Jackson Avenue or by calling 345-7041.
