LLC Community Choir to present holiday concert Sunday

MATTOON — The Lake Land College Community Choir will present a holiday concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lake Land College Theatre.

This year’s program includes a medley of songs from the popular musical “The Phantom of the Opera,” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Another set of songs reaches into the repertoire of American folk song, featuring “Down to the River to Pray” and “The Water Is Wide.”

After some exotic Christmas carols from Spain, the choir will close the concert with Christmas favorites “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” and “Silver Bells,” as well as original compositions celebrating the holiday.

Lake Land College welcomes Shelbyville flutist Courtney Leach, who will accompany the choir on two numbers. A reception will follow in the college’s cafeteria, Laker Point.

Under the direction of Nancy Caldwell, music instructor, the Community Choir is a choir of mixed voices including students and staff from the college, as well as members of surrounding communities such as Mattoon, Charleston, Effingham, Casey, Neoga, Arthur, Kansas and Windsor. Ann Roedl of Effingham also accompanies the choir. The Community Choir was formed in January 1998 and performs two concerts annually.

The concert is free and open to the public.
