Volleyball ends season with loss
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Eastern Illinois volleyball’s volleyball season ended Sunday with a five-set loss to Eastern Kentucky, which earned an Ohio Valley Conference tournament berth.
This was a make up match from a contest canceled the previous weekend after the death of EIU assistant women’s basketball coach Jackie Moore.
With Eastern Kentucky’s postseason tournament berth pending, the teams met at Evansville, Ind., where Eastern Kentucky won 25-23, 25-13, 24-26, 22-25, 15-8.
The win got Eastern Kentucky into the sixth and final spot in next weekend’s six-team OVC Tournament, pushing its record to 10-18 overall and an even 9-9 in OVC play.
The Panthers finished 11-20 and 4-13.
. Four Panthers finished with double-digit kill totals, with junior Alex Zwettler leading all players with 25. Melanie Boykins, Erin Hake and senior Jessica Wheeler added 10 kills apiece. Sophomore liber Brittany Wallace finished with 20 digs.
On Saturday night Eastern Illinois lost its home volleyball finale to Southern Illinois Edwardsville in a 25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-22 non-conference match at Lantz Arena.
SIUE got its second win of the year and stands 2-27.
EIU was led by juniors Erin Hake and Kelsey Orr, with 10 kills apiece. Orr added 10 digs to notch a double-double. Sophomore libero Brittany Wallace led all players on the court with 26 digs and Wheeler added 11 digs of her own. SIUE had three players finish in double-figure kills, led by junior Sydney Winslow’s 16 putaways, while freshman Kelsey Mosher of Efifngham and junior Karie Downing chipped in 16 and 11 kills, respectively.
Shaina Boylan, Lauren Schutte and Jessica Wheeler each enjoyed a pre-match ceremony to honor their years with the volleyball program.
Rugby team finishes 10-0
CHARLESTON — The Eastern Illinois women’s rugby squad completed a second consecutive undefeated season on Saturday defeating a Midwest College All-Star squad, 83-5. The win moved EIU to 10-0 on the year and extended the program-best winning streak to 26 games.
Prior to the start of the game, five Panther players were honored and recognized for their years of service to the EIU Rugby program, which is an annual tradition on the home finale each season. Seniors Chase Cain, Ashley Jenkins, Crystal Jones, and Stephanie Militello, as well as early graduate, Tiffany Kennedy, enjoyed a special pre-game ceremony held in their honor.
Cross country seasons end
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s cross country teams closed out their 2009 seasons on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The EIU men finished 24th overall while the women did not post a team score after being hit with some late week illness.
The men placed 24 out of 25 scoring schools with 632 points. The top finisher was Bradley LaRocque who placed 89th overall with a 10k time of 33:40.7. LaRocque was the lone EIU runner to finish in the top 100 as Mead Hassan of Minnesota took home top honors with a mark of 30:21.9.
Matt Feldhake placed 118th with David Holm in 145th, Aaron Iaun in 154th and Matt Dettloff in 159th to account for the Panther men’s scoring runners. Feldhake finished with a time of 34:29.3 while Holm posted a mark of 35:30.5. Iaun crossed in 35:52.7 with Dettloff close behind at 36:08.01.
Mario Castrejon and Graham Morris rounded out the EIU men’s team that traveled to Missouri State. Castrejon was 165th with a time of 36:32.3 while Morris was 168th at 36:45.2.
On the women’s side EIU was saddled with several scheduled runners coming down with a late week illness as head coach Geoff Masanet scratched three runners on Friday morning from the scheduled trip. Senior Erin O’Grady was the top women’s runner for the Panthers with a time of 24:33.0 finishing in 145th place.
Danielle Dickman, Elizabeth Dole and Stephanie Peisker rounded out the four-member EIU team that made the trip. Dickman was 157th with a time of 24:56.8 while Dole was 167th at 25:43.4. Peisker closed out the EIU runners in 170th position at 25:53.4
Angela Bizzarri of Illinois was the overall women’s winner in the 6K distance at 20:07.5. Minnesota won the women’s team title while Oklahoma State captured the men’s regional title.
