Livestock initiative approved in Ohio

Mary Cox, Coles County Farm Bureau

A big vote for the livestock industry in Ohio came last Tuesday as voters approved a ballot initiative that will establish a board on livestock care standards.

The newly approved Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board will be made up of 13 members, including Ohio’s ag director, family farmers, veterinarians, a representative from a local humane society and consumers.

The board members will set standards for the care, treatment and welfare of livestock raised in Ohio based on ethics and science.

This initiative allows both sides to voice their opinions and create the highest standards for the Ohio livestock industry and any other state(s) that may follow in Ohio’s footsteps.

Ohio has really opened the door for other states to follow on the issue of livestock care and well-being.

The Illinois Farm Bureau supported this effort by making contributions to assist in the voter education of the initiative.

Roadway Safety Reminder

This is a reminder for all motorists to be on the lookout for farm equipment on the roadway. Now that it is getting darker earlier, it can sometimes be more difficult to see the farm equipment. Please slow down and be cautious when passing.

PrimeTimers

The group will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 19 at Two Flowers. A tour of the Tarble Arts Center will follow.

Please RSVP by calling the office at 345-3276 or 234-2125.

Mary Cox is the manager of the Coles County Farm Bureau.
