Winning bands earn a ticket to ride
High school, middle school bands both win championships

MATTOON — The Pride of the Green Wave Marching Band received a fire truck escort through Mattoon around 8:15 p.m. last Saturday and the Mattoon Middle School Wildcat Marching Band received a police escort around 10:15 p.m. Saturday after both concluded their marching competition seasons on a perfect note.

History was made when both bands were awarded Grand Champion Trophies at marching band competitions on the same day.

The high school band performed in Class A/AA in the Atwood-Hammond Marching Rajah Band Festival Field Show and Parade Competition. The middle school band performed in the Oblong Spooktacular Parade Competition.

The next performance for the Pride of the Green Wave Marching Band and Mattoon Middle School Wildcat Marching Band will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Mattoon Holiday Parade.

In the field show competition at Atwood-Hammond, the high school band performed their field show titled “Beethoven’s New World Tour 2009.” Selections in the field show included Beethoven’s Fifth, Halo Theme, New World and Ode to Joy. The color guard placed first, drum line placed first, drum majors placed second, and the band placed first.

In the parade competition the band performed “A New World-Third Movement.” The color guard placed first, drum line placed first, drum majors placed first, and the band placed first.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Mattoon High School Pride of the Green Wave was awarded the Over-All Traveling Grand Champion Award for receiving the highest combined field show and parade scores of all classes.

The high school band is under the direction of Todd Black; color guard instructors are Angi Black and Allison Christian; drum major instructor is Mike Starwalt, and percussion instructor is Matt Black.

The Middle School was also successful at the Oblong Spooktacular Parade Competition.

The MMS Drum Line performed their cadences in the non-competitive Drum Line Showcase. They were the only middle school drum line that played in this event.

Later that evening, the entire band marched in the Spooktacular Parade. They performed the tune “Ghostbusters” and marched in their T-shirts with the “Ghostbusters” logo.

In the parade competition overall, the Marching Wildcats placed first. Drum Majors and Colorguard both were awarded the first place captions in their divisions. Drum Line placed second in their category.

At the end of the evening, over all all of the other junior highs, the MMS Marching Band was awarded “Grand Champion.”

The Middle School band is under the direction of Mr. Mark King along with student teacher Miss Sydney Kelley. The color guard instructor is Allison Christian and Colorguard assistant, Rebecca Hunt.
