LETTER: Honor veterans with a visit, donate time
VALERIE WASINSKI, 7th Grade orange team
When is the right time to honor the people that have served or are still serving in the military?
Is one day really enough to express our thanks to the individuals that have put their life on the line? Do the veterans think that Veterans Day is enough to honor what they have done?
There are people who have lost limbs, become stricken with disease, have been shot at, and have walked through mine fields relying on their dogs to sniff out bombs — all to serve our country. If you reflect on all they have done, is one single day really enough?
They have done so much for us, and all we can do is give them one assigned day of thanks. We need to go visit veterans, converse with heroes about their time fighting for our country. We need to have a day, maybe once a month, to honor our veterans.
We need to talk about what they have done to keep our freedoms that other countries don’t have. On Veterans Day, we should donate time and money to repair hospitals, such as the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In Current Events magazine, it was stated that dead cockroaches and rodent droppings litter the floor. “The conditions in the room were unforgivable,” said Army Specialist, Jeremy Duncan.
There are some who have lost their best friend while standing beside them. Not a day goes by when they don’t grieve for their lost friends. Sure, they can think about their friends, but maybe on Veterans Day, names could be read off of our fallen soldiers.
Just thinking about it is not enough. Put it into action! Write to a veteran. Make their day by asking what their most memorable moment was, what frightened them the most? What was their proudest moment? A moment that really made them say, “Yeah, that’s why I joined the military.”
If they were drafted, ask them how they felt. Or, why did they volunteer? The veterans want to talk, and it would mean that much more to them if someone took time out of their day to come and chat with them. My grandpa loved to tell stories.
There isn’t a right or wrong time to honor our military heroes.
Instead of having a day to honor them, do something. Read off names of fallen soldiers, visit our heroes, and donate time to our veterans!
