Arcola doesn't rehire Kiger
By MIKE MONAHAN, Staff Writer mmonahan@jg-tc.com
ARCOLA -- A little over two years ago, Nov. 3, 2007, to be exact, Jarod Kiger helped guide Arcola’s football team to arguably the most dramatic come-from-behind win in the 116 year history of the program as the Purple Riders scored 12 points in the final one minute, 33 seconds for the 26-24 IHSA Class 1A second round playoff victory over No. 3 Jacksonville Routt.
Flash ahead two years later. Kiger, the football coach for the past four seasons, was not rehired by the Arcola school board by a vote of 6-0 (one member was absent). This occurred after the Purple Riders had a 1-8 season, its worst since 1975. Arcola lost three games by 10 points or less.
“I was obviously quite surprised,” said Kiger, who also teaches social studies and is the baseball coach. “It has been four years and we have had some pretty good success, three playoff teams, a semifinal and a Little Okaw Valley Conference championship. They didn’t give a reason. They wanted to go in a different direction and apparently it doesn’t include me.”
In addition, assistant coach Brody Walworth, who has been with Kiger the past four years and is a 2005 Mattoon graduate, was not rehired. Walworth is also an assistant track coach.
“We will advertise as soon as possible for the head coaching job,” said Arcola athletics director Nancy Stiff.
In Kiger’s first year, 2006, he brought the Purple Riders to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 after being an assistant for two years. In the 2007 season the Purple Riders finished 10-3 reaching the quarterfinals and semifinals for the first time since 1997 as well as an LOVC title. In 2008 Arcola reached the second round of the Class 1A playoffs and reached the playoffs for the third straight year, something that had not been done since Joe Marks led the 1997, ’98 and ’99 teams to the playoffs.
“I did get the opportunity to talk to the board and answer any concerns they might have,” said Kiger. “I got a chance to say my piece.”
This year the Purple Riders finished 1-8 with three losses being by 10 points or less. The 1-8 season was the worst since 1975. The next year Arcola went 9-1 and made the IHSA Class 2A playoffs under Steve Thomas, who was 31-58 in his first two seasons before finishing his Illinois Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame career going 173-30 in his final 18 seasons.
Arcola was No. 17 in the preseason rankings this season, which marked the first time since 2000 the Purple Riders were in the preseason rankings. The Purple Riders had 14 lettermen back from a 7-4 team.
“For a variety of reasons it didn’t work out this year,” said Kiger. “I wish them success with whoever comes in.”
Kiger is to coach the baseball team for his seventh year, where he has a record of 72-67.
“I talked to a few kids today (Thursday) just to make sure they knew it wasn’t my decision,” said Kiger. “I am disappointed right now. You always want to leave things better than they were when you arrived. We had some good times. I know six years ago when I started as an assistant under Nathan Watson they had not been to the playoffs in a few years. We got the numbers increased and the weight room training program going and made the playoffs in 2006, ’07 and ’08. This year for a variety of reasons the season didn’t run out well. I understand as a head coach it is my responsibility. At the end of the day it is not this person or that person and that is just a part of coaching.”
Kiger is a 1996 Carrollton graduate where he coached from 2001-2003, going 14-15, including 7-4 in 2001. In four years at Arcola Kiger was 25-18, bringing his seven-year total to 39-33 with four playoff appearances.
As for the future Kiger said, “I really like this community. I have not made any decisions. I have my teaching job and in today’s economy that is a plus.”
