LETTER: Veterans should be honored all year long

VIVIAN LIU, 7th Grade Black Team

Throughout the course of American history, our military has proved itself to be courageous, persevering, as well as intelligent in the face of war and peace.

The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard have defended our country with dedication, some sacrificing their lives — for us.

In my opinion, there is no one, specific time to honor our military. They should be honored throughout the year. Such heroes and heroines should be remembered each and every day.

Every day of the week, whatever month it happens to be, whichever season is visiting, the U.S. military has never ceased to ensure our safety and freedom. They work through weekends, and may not get enough food or sleep, risking their lives so we can sleep soundly

For a moment, put yourself in their shoes. Stand in the face of constant danger and stay there — for how long? Think of figures like days, weeks, months… or even years.

None of my family has served, but when I hear my classmates’ stories, all speak with pride, but some speak quietly, with sadness for a lost relative or friend.

Last year, sometime in mid-winter, news reached our elementary school that a teacher at the middle school had lost her son. He had left behind his wife and children.

The whole school lined silently on the sidewalks, and held out American flags while the procession of police cars, fire trucks, and other vehicles passed by. Several of them had their own American flags.

There was recently an article in our local paper about a man who wore his rubber, camouflage “Support the Troops” wristband for over a month. It shows that you don’t need blaring parades or mountains of confetti to honor our military.

It can be as simple as sending the message “thank you” in sign language to a service personnel or wearing a wristband. Next time you see someone who has served, be sure to show your appreciation. I believe that because the military is protecting us every day, they deserve to be honored every day.
