OUR VIEW: Voters have few choices in 2010 elections

Candidate filings for primary elections in the area are a mixed offering.

Some offices, such as judge for the 5th Judicial Circuit, offer choices for voters, with four Republican candidates.

But there are no candidates from the Democratic Party at this point. If the Democrats do not appoint a candidate next spring, the winner of the Republican primary will be the next judge in the circuit.

“All politics is local” is a comment attributed to Tip O’Neill, former speaker of the U.S. House.

But local politics comes up short when voters don’t have choices.

In the February primary, other than the judge race, the only other contested race is for sheriff in Douglas County, where three Republicans have filed petitions.

That’s it.

In seven counties, there appear to be no other contested races in the primary, according to petitions filed in each of the counties. The filing period ended Monday.

As of now, there are no contested county races in Clark County either in February or in the November general election.

Other area county residents will have at least some choices come November.

Cumberland County residents will have candidates from both major parties for clerk, treasurer and sheriff, while two of three county board races are contested.

Douglas County has only a contested race for sheriff among the three countywide offices and several county board seats up for election in November. In addition to the three Republican candidates for sheriff, there also is one Democratic candidate.

Edgar County will have contested races for clerk, treasurer and sheriff but not for county board next fall.

Moultrie County will see a contest for sheriff and county board in November but not for clerk or treasurer.

Shelby County voters will have contested races in three of 11 county board districts but only one candidate for clerk, treasurer and sheriff.

It’s a similar situation here in Coles, with a contested race only for sheriff in November but not for clerk, treasurer or any of the six county board districts up for election in 2010.

It’s unfortunate there aren’t more people willing to get involved in local government.

We appreciate the service of those who do run for office on the local level, whether it is for city and village, school board or county offices.

We think people are served best when they have choices, when candidates are required to explain their positions and voters can see which of two or more candidates best matches their views.

With just a few contested races on the ballots, voters should have ample opportunity to focus on the qualifications of those candidates.

" Voters have few choices in 2010 elections? Why take notice now? Since when has having few choices or having one party dominance ever mattered in the past? Just look at any large, metropolitan city like Chicago, San Francisco, LA, or New York. They're all dominated by one party. Care to guess which party dominates the countries cities? Yeah we all know that answer...and the by-product is sitting in the Whitehouse. So by the JG/TC raising this concern, one should be suspect of the JG/TC's political motives. "

" neocon academician,

has it about right!!

if you value your country, like i know most of you liberals don't, the only choice needs to be the gop, forget the rest on the ticket.

most liberals to include the the liberal press are bent on seeing the country in free fall, such as going to hell in a hand basket is the reason we have a person in the white house that is seving in a capacity above his pay grade!!!!!

ben, you seem to forget which party put this country in it's current mess. Compare the state of the country when Bush took over from a Democratic administration to the condition that Obama inherited.

Those on the right side like to talk about the mess Reagan inherited but when it come to todays mess seem to have developed a case of amnesia.

By the way Liberals value this country as much as Conservatives do, we just have a differnet view on what needs to be done. "

" Liberal or Conservative, people need to voice their opinions on the battlefield of politics. Leave the personal attacks and derogatory name calling out of it, why can't we all be friends, why do we have to hate on everyone. Lets be fair voice our concern/opinion. After all that is what our country is based on, leave the personal attacks out always. "

Hey ben, take it easy. You seem to be a little upset. I probably watch Fox news as much as you do, so how much more conservative than that can you get? Besides that I get several conservative newsletters via e-mail too. All in all I probably keep up with conservative thinking material more than most of the rabid right wingers on here. Oh, and your name calling the president sure gives your arguments a lot of credibility. Is that the best you have? When it comes to political discussions, it appears that you're in over your head. "

What kind of content was that again, Benny? "

" One thing I can never wrap my brain around is why do Republicans and Democrats, Conservtives and Liberals always butt heads like to male rams fighthing over territory rather than work toghter for the good of All of the American People?

Usually both sides want the same things they just seem to disagree about how to get those things accomplished. Not only does this waste taxpayer dollars while the opposing sides battle it out, but it gets us no where as a country.

Ben I'm not as political as some people that I know but I know that liberals do value their country as much as conservitives do. The opposing sides just have diffrent ideas on how to accomplish things. I used to be a total liberal, now I am liberal on some issues and conservitive on others. Why the switch? I read everything I can, have dissucsions with people who are liberals as well as conservitives, Democrats, Green Party, Republicans. People who favor big goverment programs and people who favor less goverment ran everything. I read historical polcies and learn about historical candidates: Thomas Jefferson, Abe Lincoln, Teddy Rosevelt, Franklin Rosevelt, Ronald Regan, Jimmy Carter, Lydon Johnson etc.
I did find that every adminstration has made its share of mistakes. Ben this is not meant as a personal dig at you and I apologize if it comes across as one, but a little education really goes a long way. We all care about our country regardless of what political party we support, or if we are liberals or conservitives.

Becky you said it perfectly: Other than lip service, I see no difference between the 2 parties so what's your point? " "

" Ben, you are so obviously overtaken by the right wing Faux no-news talking points that any rational thought you may have once had has jumped through the proverbial window.

Name-calling, especially of our esteemed president is uncalled for. Trying to paint him as a muslim is also uncalled for. (BTW, it's not necessarily just Muslim - if you painted him as Chinese I would be equally insulted). To be sure, as you probably can tell, I was NEVER a Bush fan, but I never once sullied his name. I gave him the respect for the office as he deserved (ya, even though he stole the election in Florida - but that's an argument for another day). I watched every President's message with my family because I said to my children, "Regardless of how I feel about his policies, he is still our president and we should respect him". Can you say the same? I think not.

Your short-term memory has short-circuited. Exactly WHO got us into this financial spending mess? BUSH and his fabulously give-to-our-already-overfilled-piggy-bank friends who raped the country of our stable economy, our budget SURPLUS, and most importantly, our men and women who have died there in numbers too cruel to even mention here, all to avenge his father's war and get more work for Haliburton. Oh yea, sure, it's all President Obama's fault.

Your words defy logic. "
