'Showcase of Stars' today at MHS



MATTOON — The Mattoon High School Dance Team will host the IDTA Showcase of the Stars today in the MHS main gym.

This event includes the Miss Illinois Drill team pageant, the Teen Miss Pageant, and the Jr. Miss pageant. Members of middle school and high school dance teams from throughout Illinois are eligible to compete.

The winners will go on to the national pageant in California.

Also included in the day’s events are the trio and duo competitions. All high school dance team members can compete in groups of two and three to win the title of top trio and duo in the state of Illinois.

The competition this year also includes flag competition. Members of flag teams will compete for the award of Miss Flag IDTA.

The Showcase will feature Thayne Jasperson of TV’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” Jasperson has toured throughout the world as a professional dancer and choreographer.

The competition will begin at 10:20 a.m. today, with final awards scheduled at 6:15 p.m.

Admission for the competition is $5 per person, with children 3 and under free.

The parents of the Wavettes will sell breakfast, lunch and dinner in the cafe. Several vendors also will have booths in the cafe, with merchandise for sale.

Mattoon competitors and their scheduled performance times are:

- Courtney St. John – MHS Colorguard, 11:41 a.m., Solos Flag;

-Whitney Miller – Varsity Wavettes, 11:53 a.m., Miss IDTA;

-Whitney Miller, Maggie Price and Stefani Atkinson – Varsity Wavettes, 1:44 p.m., trio;

- Rebecca Hunt and Hannah Austin — MHS Colorguard, 2:43 p.m., duo;

- Gretchen Olmsted – Varsity Wavettes, 2:46 p.m., Miss IDTA;

- Courtney Beals and Courtney St. John – MHS Colorguard, 3:25 p.m., duo;

- Maggie Price – Varsity Wavettes, 3:59 p.m., Miss IDTA;

- Whitney Miller and Gretchen Olmsted – Varsity Wavettes, 4:02 p.m., duo;

-Macy Brown – MMS Purrfections, 5:25 p.m., Junior Miss;

- Emmy Conyers – MMS Purrfections, 5:49 p.m., Junior Miss.

The top 15 Miss Contestants will be announced at 4:15 p.m. They will then begin competition mode again at 4:40 p.m.
