Schools plan programs next week in honor of area's military men, women



Area schools plan programs next week to salute veterans.

A full listing of Wednesday Veterans Day activities will be published Monday.

Arcola High School

Elementary, junior high, and high school students will honor all veterans and active military personnel who attend an assembly at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Arcola High School.

Visitors should use the north entrance of the cafeteria (nearest the high school gym). Parking is available in the north parking lot. Valet parking will be available.

The assembly includes the Boy Scout Troop 88 color guard and introduction of veterans and military personnel in attendance. There will also be a kick-off for the Home For Troops fundraiser plus a question-and-answer period after the assembly for junior high and high school students. Refreshments are available for honored guests from 2 to 3 p.m. and special recognition of French Medal of Honor winner Joe Ernst.

Arthur Grade School

At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Arthur Grade School will host a Veterans Day program for all K-6 students and their families. This year the program will include a special display on the gym wall prepared by the students and staff. There will also be music and speakers representing veteran-related groups, explaining their roles.

Monroe School in Casey

Veterans are encouraged to enjoy food and friendship with Monroe School from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday in Casey.

Cumberland High School

The third annual Veterans Day program for Cumberland High School starts at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in the gym. The program will honor all veterans and active-duty service men and women. They are encouraged to attend the ceremony.

Eastern Illinois University

The Eastern Illinois University Wind Symphony will salute veterans past and present with “The Call to Duty” concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

People may join the Student Veterans of Eastern and other student, staff and faculty veterans, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in front of Old Main.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved inside the building.

Lt. Col. Stephen Knotts, a faculty veteran, and Tyler Linder, a student veteran, will be among those making remarks. EIU President Bill Perry is also scheduled to speak.

Those attending should park in the “X” lot east of Old Main.

Lake Land College

The celebration kicks off Monday with a ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Field House. The Mattoon Veterans of Foreign Wars will present and retire colors while State Sen. Dale Righter and State Rep. Chapin Rose will speak.  The Lake Land Community Choir will perform. This event is free and open to the public.

From 10 a.m. to 2 .m. Tuesday behind Laker Point, EIU ROTC Military Science Department, in conjunction with the National Guard and the Charleston Army Recruiting office present Rock Wall Dog Tag Machine, Obstacle Course Future Soldier Trainer, Patriot Hummer with Video Game Football Toss.

Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Theater, Veterans Day Panel comprised of students and area veterans will discuss what it’s like to be a veteran.

Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Webb Hall 081 - “When I Was 19,” a short documentary of two students who transition from military life to being a college student.

Okaw Valley in Bethany

Okaw Valley school district invites all veterans and family members to a Veterans Day program Tuesday at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany.

Breakfast will be provided at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria, and a short assembly will follow at 9:15 a.m. featuring band and chorus students.

Anyone planning to attend is asked to RSVP by calling 665-3232.

St. Mary School, Mattoon

St. Mary will have a ceremony to thank veterans at 10 a.m. Monday in the school gym. It will include singing, poetry readings, and the reciting of family members that are veterans.

Shelbyville High School

Shelbyville’s Veterans Day Program starts at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the high school gym.

This is the sixth year for the program that honors all branches of the military and recognizes their service song. The event will include a color guard of Shelbyville Boy Scout Troop 51, the Mt. Zion drummers, 7- year-old Alexis Cutler singing the National Anthem, Moulton-In-Motion Dancers, and a special guest from World War II will be presented with his story.

The public is invited and all veterans are encouraged to attend and receive a special gift that has been provided by the Moulton Student Council.

Stewardson-Strasburg

The sixth graders will perform “Lest We Forget,” a musical drama in honor of local veterans, starting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Stewardson-Strasburg High School gym.

The play includes songs telling the history of Veterans Day and the country’s involvement in wars and recognition to all branches of the military.
