LIC foes battle for sectional title; Windsor to host Mount Pulaski

Two Little Illini Conference volleyball foes are to battle for the IHSA Class 1A sectional championship at 7 p.m. today at Red Hill High School in Bridgeport as Cumberland tangles with Edwards County. Cumberland enters with a 27-2 record, while the Lady Lions are 34-3.

Windsor is to play host to Mount Pulaski at 7 p.m. today in another sectional championship game for perennial power Mount Pulaski. The Lady Blue Devils are 29-7 and the Lady Toppers are 27-11.

Red Hill Sectional

Both Cumberland and Edwards County advanced with two-set sweeps in the sectional semifinals. The two teams played Sept. 24 at Cumberland with the Lady Lions winning 29-27, 23-25, 25-15. Last year the Lady Pirates eliminated Edwards County for the postseason en route to a third-place Class 1A finish with a 25-21, 20-25, 25-16 win in the sectional semifinals at Dieterich. Edwards County had defeated Cumberland 25-17, 25-22 earlier in the season.

In 2007 the Lady Lions won 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 in a regular season match and Edwards County went on to finish third. In 2006 Edwards County reached the state quarterfinals in the last year of the two-class system beating the Lady Pirates in the regular season 14-25, 25-15, 32-30.

Cumberland has won 18 straight matches with the last loss being to Edwards County. The Lady Pirates avenged one of its losses in the sectional semifinals with the 25-18, 26-24 win over South Central and are hoping to do the same today.

It is the second straight season Cumberland has played in the sectional championship, a place it had not been until last year. The seniors for the Lady Pirates (Macy Shupe and Brittany Whitaker) enter the match with a combined 97-23 record.

Edwards County is coached by Linda Oxby Brown, who is in her 20th year (15th at Edwards County with 412-112 for the Lady Lions), with a 502-151 record including 13 regional titles, 7 sectional titles and five trips to the state tournament ( two with Coal City).

Windsor sectional

Windsor is in unchartered waters having never won sectional semifinals until topping Danville Schlarman 25-18, 25-19 Tuesday. The Lady Blue Devils are facing a team that is has plenty of postseason experience in Mount Pulaski.

Mount Pulaski, 25-20, 25-19 winners over Tri-County are to play for its 18th sectional title all under Arthur graduate Donna Dulle 882-214 in her 29th year at the helm, including two state titles in 1989 and 2007 and nine other trips to the state tournament.

Seven players on the Lady Topper roster of 15 were on the team in 2007, including starter Lindsey Durcholz, who was second on the team in digs and third in aces as a sophomore. Morgan Litterly was fourth in kills and third in blocks on the 2007 squad, while Ellen Olsen was second in assists. The other four players on the state champion team were Haley Bowles, Samantha Nichols, Megan Griesheim and Kyley Wyss.

This is not only the first time Windsor has reached the Elite Eight in volleyball but also the first time in any sport. The 1959-60 boys’ basketball team won the district and regional championship.

The Lady Blue Devils are led by 6-0 and 5-11 juniors Haley Maxwell and Hannah Cole.
