Coles County election filing period ends
By DAVE FOPAY, Staff Writer dfopay@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON — The office of Coles County sheriff is the only county office to be elected next year that has drawn candidates from both major political parties.
The week-long period for candidates to file to have their names on the February primary ballot ended Monday with only one addition from the first day’s filings. That was Doyle Anderson, an incumbent Republican Coles County Board member, who joined the five other current board members who filed a week ago.
In the sheriff’s race, filings remained unchanged since last week, when incumbent Republican Darrell Cox and Democrat Ed Johnson, a former Mattoon police officer, filed to run for the office. They’ll be unopposed for their parties’ nomination in the Feb. 2 primary but will face one another in the Nov. 2, 2010, general election.
County Clerk Sue Rennels and Treasurer George Edwards, both Republicans, filed for re-election at the start of last week and they’ll be unopposed for the party’s nominations. Political parties have a chance to fill ballot vacancies after the primary, so that would be the only way Rennels or Edwards would have a general election opponent.
Anderson filed for re-election in County Board District 1, which covers much of the northern part of the county. He joined the other board members, all Republicans, who filed last week: John Hurst in District 2, rural Charleston; Marc Weber in District 3, Charleston; Mike Weaver in District 4, Mattoon; Paul Daily in District 6, rural Mattoon; and Phil Wilson in District 7, Mattoon.
Meanwhile, no additional candidates filed for a judge’s position in the judicial circuit that includes Coles County. Four candidates, all Republicans, filed last week with the Illinois State Board of Elections in Springfield to run for the vacant judge’s position in the 5th Judicial Circuit.
Charleston city attorney Brian Bower, Coles County Assistant State’s Attorney Eric Neumann, Edgar County State’s Attorney Matt Sullivan and Danville attorney Frank Young filed to run for the opening from former judge Dale Cini’s retirement. Voters in all the counties in the judicial circuit will vote in the judge’s election, and the other counties are Clark, Cumberland, Edgar and Vermilion.
