OUR VIEW: Rosebud Theatre patrons deserve better treatment
By the JG/T-C Editorial Board
The recent announcement that the financially strapped Rosebud Theatre in Effingham would be closing was disappointing to local residents who enjoyed having big-name entertainment close to home.
But that disappointment turned to shock for those who had bought tickets in advance for shows scheduled in 2010.
Apparently the Rosebud is in such a financial mess that it has no money available to refund ticket prices for concerts it will no longer present.
That means area residents who bought their tickets early for a 2010 lineup that was to include performances by Shirley Jones and Kenny Rogers, among others, are out of luck. Not only will they not get to see those stars in concert, they won’t get to see their money returned to their wallets, either.
Ticket packages for the 2010 season ranged from $750 to $5,000. That’s not a small amount of money for local residents in a struggling economy.
Rosebud officials encourage 2010 ticket holders to use their tickets for the remaining shows in the 2009 season. That’s a nice gesture, but one can assume that if these patrons wanted to attend any of the 11 shows scheduled in the next few months, they would have already purchased tickets.
And some may already have tickets to this year’s shows.
The theater president announced recently that the administration didn’t realize the business was in danger of closing until the last week of September. By then, the money they had received in advance for concerts in 2010 already had been spent.
The officials’ claim of ignorance about the dire financial situation of the theater is suspect at best. The business managers should have known the theater was on shaky ground financially. In turn, enough money should have been kept in reserve to reimburse patrons if the financial situation didn’t improve before the 2010 season.
At least some of those who bought advance tickets have contacted the Consumer Fraud Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. The outcome of those complaints is unclear.
The Rosebud Theatre has been a welcome entertainment venue in East Central Illinois, and we’re sorry to see it close.
Not only was the theater an attractive entertainment venue, but it also was an example of locals working together to launch a facility that would improve the quality of life for area residents.
Local business partners invested money to make the theater a reality, and area residents purchased tickets to keep it going.
Unfortunately, it was not enough.
It’s deplorable that those same patrons who supported the facility are now being cheated due to poor financial planning and a struggling venture.
Theater officials have, in effect, hurt the very same patrons they have relied on for support. That’s just bad business.
