Sheriff, judge candidates file for election
By DAVE FOPAY, Staff Writer dfopay@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON — Only one Coles County office up for election next year has drawn the interest of more than one candidate so far.
Incumbent Sheriff Darrell Cox, a Republican, and former Mattoon police officer Ed Johnson, a Democrat, are both running for sheriff. If no other candidates decide to seek the office, Cox and Johnson would both be unopposed for their parties’ nomination and would face one another in the general election in November 2010.
Meanwhile, four candidates, all Republicans, have filed so far with the Illinois State Board of Elections in Springfield to run for the vacant judge’s position in the 5th Judicial Circuit, which includes Coles County.
Charleston City Attorney Brian Bower, Coles County Assistant State’s Attorney Eric Neumann, Edgar County State’s Attorney Matt Sullivan and Danville attorney Frank Young filed to run for the opening from former judge Dale Cini’s retirement. Voters in all the counties in the judicial circuit will vote in the judge’s election, and the other counties are Clark, Cumberland, Edgar and Vermilion.
Otherwise, Republican incumbents in county offices and Coles County Board seats were the only candidates to file as of Tuesday.
The period for candidates to file petitions to have their names on the Feb. 2 primary ballot began this week and runs through Monday, so there’s still time for contested races to emerge. The winners from the primary will advance to the Nov. 2, 2010, election.
County Clerk Sue Rennels and Treasurer George Edwards, both Republicans, filed for re-election, as did the incumbents in five of the six county board seats to be elected.
The county board members who filed, also all Republicans, were John Hurst in District 2, rural Charleston; Marc Weber in District 3, Charleston; Mike Weaver in District 4, Mattoon; Paul Daily in District 6, rural Mattoon; and Phil Wilson in District 7, Mattoon.
No candidate had filed yet in District 1, which covers much of the northern part of the county. Republican Doyle Anderson currently represents that district.
