Woman struck by car on Monday transferred to Chicago

MATTOON — A woman struck by a vehicle in Mattoon Monday is now in a Chicago hospital.

Margaret Stoke, 45, of Mattoon was listed in serious condition Friday at Loyola Medical Center in Chicago, Mattoon Deputy Police Chief Jeff Branson said. Stoke was transferred from Carle Foundation Hospital of Urbana, where she was listed in critical condition earlier in the week.

Stoke’s medical condition has made it difficult for investigators to confirm all details on what happened when a vehicle, driven by Ashley White, 17, of Mattoon, went out of control about 8:30 p.m. Monday at Richmond Avenue and North 19th Street, and hit the woman. Two eyewitnesses were about one block west of the accident, according to police accounts.

One eyewitness stated in the report of “hearing the accident and seeing the vehicle hit the building [Immaculate Conception Church Parish Center] and then seeing a person laying in the road.”

MPD investigators have established Stoke was walking north, while White was northbound before the accident occurred. However, it is not yet clear whether Stoke was in the crosswalk or on the sidewalk before the vehicle went out of control.

White’s vehicle also struck struck a fire hydrant, a crosswalk pole, a display sign by the parish center and the corner of the building. It is not yet clear why the vehicle went out of control. Police sources on Monday indicated a stuck accelerator contributed to the accident..

Anyone with information that could help the investigation should call MPD at 235-5451.
