Eastern eliminates information technology jobs

CHARLESTON — Restructuring of the Eastern Illinois University Information Technology Services will cause 11 staff members to lose their jobs.

Eight other positions that are currently vacant or will be soon also will be eliminated. The move was needed with changes such as ending use of a mainframe computer and moving from in-house applications to commercial software, said Bill Weber, EIU vice president of business affairs.

Weber said the staff whose positions will be eliminated were notified earlier this week or late last week, and the end of those positions will be effective Dec. 21. The employees received more advance notice than needed for civil service requirements so they can take advantage of training opportunities and receive paychecks through the holidays, he added.

Weber also said the staff reductions were “essential” for EIU President Bill Perry’s goal for the university “to become the best in the nation at integrating the personal and academic development of our students.” That wouldn’t be possible without improving administrative support systems, he said.

The eliminated positions include digital computer operators, scientific programmers and application programmers. Weber said EIU doesn’t “plan any further restructuring efforts of this type in the near future.”
