CAT to present evening of Beat poetry and jazz

CHARLESTON — The Charleston Alley Theatre, 718 Monroe Ave., will present an evening of legendary Beat poetry accompanied by jazz music on Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1.

Members of the EIU faculty will present poems by such luminaries as Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder and Anne Waldman, with improvisatory jazz music provided by an ensemble under the leadership of Paul Johnston.

The reading has been compiled by directors Bailey Young and David Radavich. Other members of the cast include Jeffrey Lynch, Daiva Markelis and Debra Valentino.

The jazz ensemble members are Josh Marcus, saxophone; Paul Johnston, piano;, Eric Fitts, bass; and Andy Baldwin, drums.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30-31 and 2 p.m. Nov. 1. Ticket prices are $10 and reservations are available by calling 345-2287 and at the theater one hour before curtain.

The Charleston Alley Theatre’s self-imposed mandate is to do interesting, challenging shows that are not commonly done, and feature original works by new playwrights.
