Kansas school district, village board to share electronic information sign
By ROB STROUD, Staff Writer rstroud@jg-tc.com
KANSAS — The school district and the village have partnered to create a new means of getting the word out about coming events in Kansas.
On Monday, contractors set up an electronic community information sign that the school district and village will jointly use. The sign will display time, temperature and other messages at the northeast corner of the Kansas school campus along Illinois routes 16 and 49.
“There are lots and lots of cars that go by every day,” Kansas Superintendent Chris Long said of the sign’s potential for reaching people.
Long said the sign is part of the school board’s goal of establishing better communications with the community. He said there has been a community information sign for approximately 15 years at the corner, but the messages needed to be changed manually with the help of a ladder.
The superintendent said school clubs posted their events on the old sign, but the sign often went a few weeks without a change during the worst of the winter weather. Messages, such as sporting event announcements, can be changed remotely on the new electronic sign.
School board members looked at various options for signs before selecting a Daktronics model presented by former Mattoon High School football coach Gerald Temples, Long said. The sign can display text, graphics and photographs. Long said the sign could be used to spotlight each year’s graduating class or other honorees.
Long said the school board asked for and received the village’s assistance in funding the community information sign. He said the sign is an opportunity for both governmental groups to cooperate on a project that will benefit the entire community.
The district is paying for its share of the approximately $46,000 sign with the help of a $25,000 state grant secured by state Rep. Roger Eddy, R-Hutsonville, and the district will insure and maintain the sign, Long said.
Long said the village will pay for its half of the costs via installments. He said the village will be able to post information about public works projects, boil orders and other village business. He said the sign can also be used to display information about benefit dinners, blood drives, and other special events in the community.
