Disability Awareness Day planned Nov. 6

MATTOON — The keynote speaker for the Disability Awareness Day-Transistions at Lake Land College will be Sandy Martin.

The seminar hosted by Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education, Eastern Illinois University and Lake Land College will offer a seminar for professionals, parents and students.

The seminar for professionals, CNC-024-16769; and CNC-024-16770 for parents and students will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Lake Land College.

Martin is a pre-vocational coordinator, the co-chair of the Illinois Secondary Transitional Experience Program Advisory Committee and an active member of local and regional transition planning committees.

In 2008, she was chosen by the Council for Exceptional Children to receive the National Iva Cook Teacher of the Year Award. She brings a broad range of experience and a desire to support and empower individuals with disabilities.

Disability Awareness Day will begin at 8 a.m. and will provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, special education instructors, counselors, future teachers and anyone interested in learning more about and discussing challenges associated with students with disabilities.

The focus will primarily be on helping these students transition into college or into the real world; and to network and gain new insight into transition issues.

Current technology resources will be shared and demonstrated by Infinitec, Illinois Assistive Technology, and Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.

Other topics will include a general overview of transition, using career and technical education assessments in transition planning, and presenting transition plans in a student-led IEP.

One-half of a college credit will be given to all participants. Lunch will be provided and more than 15 vendors will be present.

The cost will be $30 for professionals and $25 for parents and students, and it includes breaks and lunch.

For a registration brochure, contact LLC at jmorecra@lakeland.cc.il.us or 234-5470; EIU at klwaggoner@eiu.edu or 581-6583; or EIASE at ehumphrey@eiase.com or 348-7700, ext. 203.

The drop date is five business days prior to the start date, or Oct. 30.
