Sullivan takes fourth, Mattoon goes 1-4 at Mount Zion

MOUNT ZION -- Sullivan finished fourth, the highest place finish out of the three Journal Gazette/Times-Courier teams, at the Mount Zion volleyball tournament Monday.

Mattoon went 1-4 playing without season kills and digs leader Reynae Hutchinson, who last week suffered a hip flexor injury. Okaw Valley went 2-3.

Sullivan beat Springfield Lanphier 25-15, 25-13 and lost to Mount Zion 25-12, 25-13 before beating Okaw Valley 25-23, 20-25, 16-14 in pool play, placing second. In tournament play Sullivan lost to Decatur St. Teresa 25-7, 25-12 and fell to Mount Zion in the third place match 25-10, 25-18.

Okaw Valley beat Springfield Lanphier 25-16, 21-25, 15-9 and 27-25, 25-21 while falling to Mount Zion 25-21, 25-13 and to Mattoon and Sullivan.

Murphysboro, 26-3, won the tournament by beating Decatur St. Teresa 25-15, 25-21 in the championship.

Tabitha Davis had a team-high 23 kills, while Chelsee McMahan had 20 digs and Paige Neuhasuer had 44 assists. Lauren Harris led in blocks with six.

Mattoon lost pool matches to Decatur St. Teresa 25-17, 25-18; Murphysboro 25-18, 25-17; and Tolono Unity 25-20, 17-25, 25-10. The Lady Wave then defeated Okaw Valley 25-21, 25-16 but lost the sixth-place match to Tolono Unity 26-24, 26-24.

“The girls I think were all affected by the fact Reynae wasn’t playing,” Lady Wave coach Susan Hutchinson said. “I was hoping that the rest of the girls wanted to prove they were just as effective team with her as they were without her. All the teams we played there was no reason the outcomes could not have been different.

“I was real pleased with Kayla Jacobs. She stepped up and played well. Lindsey Quick played a good defensive game with serve reception. Shannon Lowry I felt played a very nice tournament. There were some bright spots. It was just I felt we could have had a little different results if we would have come in with a chip on our shoulder showing we’re as good of a team with her as we are without her.”

Okaw Valley was led in digs by Grace Weber with 105 in 12 games for an average of 8.8 digs per game. She also led in kills with 15.

Sullivan, 6-20, is to travel to Argenta-Oreana for an Okaw Valley Conference match today.

Mattoon is 18-9 going into Thursday’s Big 12 Conference game at Decatur Eisenhower.

Okaw Valley is 11-12 and is to play host to Martinsville today in a Little Okaw Valley Conference contest.
