LETTER: No one has the right
to incite violence

JO ELLEN JACOBS, Charleston

Where will it end?

Instead of debating health care policy our country is in a frenzy in which people are doing polls on Facebook about whether or not the president should be killed, where “protesters” carry signs that say “Bury Obama with Ted Kennedy” or urge a military coup, and where those who disagree with the president’s ideas show up at rallies with guns strapped to their thighs.

What if African-Americans showed up at McCain rallies with guns saying they were merely asserting their Second Amendment rights? Would they be tolerated?

Thomas Friedman’s article this week noted the similarity in the atmosphere of this country now and Israel just before Rabin was assassinated. Where are the leaders of the right who should be denouncing this kind of “protest”?

Everyone should have the right to speak—to disagree with the policies of anyone. But no one has the right to incite violence. Much of the atmosphere in this country now is troubling. If we don’t stop it, we may all have blood on our hands.

More than ever, Yeats’ words speak to our time: “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;/Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,…The best lack all conviction, while the worst/Are full of passionate intensity.”

" Well Jo Ellen, I do believe that the person that you speak of with the gun was an African American. What about the African Americans who voted for McCain. As a veteran I swore an oath to uphold and defend The Constitution against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. Does a sitting president or congress of either party who threatens to destroy the very fabric of the constitution fall within the category of DOMESTIC enemy? Forty eight percent of those who voted in the last presidential election did not vote for Barack Obama, and you are somehow surprised by the opposition to his policies? The evidence is clear that the only ones using violence at these types of protests were members of the SEIU, who supported obama. Where are the leaders of the left, should they not have spoken out against this violence. Where are the leaders of the left when the ACORN films came out. They were quickly doing the democrat duck and shuffle to distance themselves from a group that they supported. Where are your democratic leaders who shouted that Gitmo must be closed, but to date, nothing has been done to close it. Where are those democrats that screamed that Bush was violating our civil rights with the Patriot Act...I do believe they are the ones supporting the extension of those powers by our current president. Do you know why there have been no war crimes trials, because if they have them, they will set precedent to try and convict any number of those who currently sit at posts in this administration. Things will definately fall apart. They will fall apart because of SHEEPLE like yourself. Drink some more of your SOMA laced KOOLAID, sit back and relax, we have 3 more years of this, and things are going to get a lot hotter. At the very least, look up the SNL skit on the O's great accomplishments since taking office. You may get a resounding confirmation of what your contribution has been. You voted for nothing. "

" Let me first say that I agree the protesters carrying signs suggesting the president should be assassinated are beyond what is acceptable behavior in a civil society, but to suggest that this all started in January and is only being perpetrated by those on the right is ridiculous. There were those on the left saying and displaying sentiments just as dispicable towards President Bush. Where is your outrage about that Jo Ellen? When I attended the funeral for one of my fallen comrades and had to drive past a throng of angry protesters carrying signs bearing such poetic slogans as "When a soldier dies, God laughs", where was your outrage? You can come on here and spout off about how horrible people are for opposing President Obama until you are blue in the face, but until you recognize that it exists on both sides, you are doing nothing to help the problem. The fact is that you don't want it to stop, you simply want it to be silenced when you don't agree with it. Nice letter. It is a real shining example of bipartisan cool-headedness. "

There was a lot of criticism, from both sides I would add, on the deplorable actions of the so called Reverend Fred Phelps and his attempts to disrupt the funerals services of fallen soldiers. The actions of a small minority of people who have got a lot of press is inexcusable. No it didn't just start in January, but it certainly has escalated with the election of our current president. Sadly, it's being aided and abetted as well as orchestrated by the radical right. If you can't see that, then you are wearing blinders, my friend. "

" Now, yes it is disgusting to advocate the death of a single man. Yet, is calling for the overthrow of the government inciting violence?? I say no, the weather underground during the 60's called for the overthrow an even attacked government and banking buildings. Too keep people from harm, when they placed their bombs they called ahead telling those inside that all should evacuate. Out of all their bombings only one cop was killed and one injured. To me thats not an act of violence towards the populous it was towards the government. Sad as it was for the cop who died, it was his job. Just as a solider knows when he or she signs up for military knows there is a chance that they may die.
Now i voted for Obama, but I advocate the overthrow of the government. To me its not party politics, its the government itself that upsets me. So if we the people demand the abolishment of the government and the government does so peaceful then thats great. Yet, even if 3/4's of the country supported my group and other radicals, I know in my heart that the government, corporations, and others that bid for power will not allow it too go without violence.

where do you draw the line? "

Black Football Players Not Eager To Play For Limbaugh.

Yesterday I suggested that Rush Limbaugh, were he to buy the St. Louis Rams, would have a very hard time finding black players who would be willing to play for him, given his history of racially inflammatory statements. According to Ben Armbruster at Thinkprogress, more black players are coming out and explicitly saying they wouldn't play for Limbaugh.

On the bright side, with an all-white football team, Limbaugh can prove to the world how "overrated" black players are.

Good luck with that. "

" All of this is a result of the continued escalation in our politics. At this point it is senseless and worthless to try to figure out who started it or when it started, but to use a broad stroke it started in Washington. It started when politicians stopped trying to work together and became animatedly opposed to what the "other side" was saying or doing. The media then added fuel to the fire with their various slants and with a monkey see, monkey do mentality the extreme disharmony spilled onto the street.

The only way this is going to change is for the PEOPLE to say ENOUGH! The citizens need to change the way they express themselves and DEMAND that those elected to SERVE us do the same and demand that the media in this nation return to practicing responsible journalism instead of slanting the news to fit their own agendas.

One way or another a Revolution is coming to this country. The only question is if it is going to be a peaceful one or a bloody one, and if people can not figure out how to discuss their views in a respectful, civilized manner it will be the latter without a doubt.

At this point maybe the best thing for everyone to do is to sharpen their swords and dull their tongues and be prepared for either eventuality. "

Here's another thing, remember when Cheney promised he would donate his profits from Halliburton to charity? That was 8 years ago and to the best of my understanding he still hasn't done that. Obama promised to donate his money to charity too. Think the right wingers will watch for that. Fox will probably do a daily feature on it. "

Democracy can not be won by the point of a sword and I don't think it can be saved by the point to a sword. We might be able to prevent an outright takeover by non-democratic forces but that isn't the same as actually "saving" democracy. But that point is far too subtle for most of the minds on these pages to grasp. "

Protesters who managed to escape the fascist "free speech zones" and get anywhere near Bush were arrested, and none of them ever had signs suggesting Bush be assassinated. Certainly none of them were ever brandishing guns and carrying signs about refreshing the tree of liberty with blood, the way they have been around Obama. So you're full of it, Soldier.
Nor did a national news channel laughingly suggest that Bush should be murdered, the way Fox News did about Obama.
Fox News pundit Liz Trotta, while discussing the idea of assassinating Osama Bin Laden and Barack Obama, said, "Well ... both, if we could!," then laughed happily.
By the way, for good measure, on Aug, 6, Fox News star Glenn Beck "joked" that he'd like to murder Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi by poisoning her tea, then had the transcript scrubbed to hide his statement. "

While she does use the line you have given, you seem to be the one who likes to cherry-pick single blurbs and wave them in everyone's face. I suggest taking an English course out at Lake Land. I'm sure it wouldn't be too expensive (perhaps Obama will pay for it), and it would teach to be able to read passages and determine their overall thesis. I think anyone with a fully-functioning brain would attest that the thesis for this letter is that the right-wing cooks are over the line and should be ashamed of themselves. To this point, I did say that I did not condone the actions being described (I'm sure you probably missed that part since it wasn't a flashy enough line to catch your attention as the only one worth reading), but for anyone on the left to come on here and acted shocked and outraged after what we saw come from that side of the aisle over the past eight years is simply laughable. You all rant and rave and scream to the skies when someone calls Obama a liar as if such a thing has never been uttered, but I heard people calling Bush a liar and a loser and a million other names for nearly a decade. The Question wrote on Oct 10, 2009 10:08 AM:

" Now, you may ask, would right wingers fake photos to support their lies. Yes, because they already have.
A photo circulated among conservatives purporting to show a large crowd at a September "tea party" on Capitol Hill was revealed to be a fake.
The photo depicted a crowd stretching from the Capitol to the Washington Monument. It was posted on conservative blogs and Facebook pages, with notations that it was taken on Sept 12.
But there is no way it could have been taken Sept. 12 because the National Museum of the American Indian is not there. The museum opened in 2004 on the east side of the Mall. It's not so the photo must have been taken before then.
You can find all the documentation for that particular conservative lie in the Washington Post edition for Sept. 14, 2009. "

There are several more sites and news reports that clearly show the same types of over the top protesting by the left, but of course you already knew that.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he just doesn't eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he tries to ban all meat products for everyone.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly enjoys his life. If a liberal is homosexual, he loudly demands legislated respect and special status.

If a black or Hispanic is conservative, he sees himself as independently successful wondering why others don't work to gain their own success. The liberal counterpart sees himself as a "victim" and a victim in need of government support and protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his

When a conservative doesn't like a talk show host or radio show host, he switches channels.
When a liberal doesn't like a talk show host or a radio show host he demands that the shows be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer of God, he doesn't go to church. If a liberal is a non-believer of God he wants all mention of God, or religion, silenced so he doesn't feel he's left out.

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for
it, or maybe chooses a job that provides it. If a liberal decides that he needs health care he demands that his neighbors pay for it.

When an argument is made by a conservative against liberal policies the conservative is called a racist, "mean-spirited", a redneck, or not very well educated. When an argument is made by a liberal against conservative policies the conservative acknowledges the argument, says nothing, yet ponders in wonderment how far America has strayed from the founding fathers principles....

Well now...at least for the last point..."THOSE DAYS ARE OVER"! "

U.S. National Park police, who are in charge of the Mall and related public spaces, used to estimate crowd sizes, but when their assessment of attendance at the Million Man March differed from that of march organizers, the organizers threatened to sue. Corralling all of America's haters and bigots as his audience doesn't make Limbaugh a hero to the rest of America. I have a feeling all of the professional haters (Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, and their ilk) have a fantasy that they are truly big guys in America. They aren't. They're the leaders of a miserable minority of people who live in ignorant fear and alcoholic hazes.

Pretty good summation of what's become of the Republican party. That party hasn't produced a decent president since Lincoln. Palin in 2012! "

And then claimed to say the hate comes from both sides, referring to this as coming from the left. Well, you're just a bit wrong. Those signs you saw at that funeral actually come from a group called the Westboro Baptist Church who would probably be just as offended by you calling them the left as anyone on the left saying they're a part of them. They most certainly are not a part of the left, nor are they a part of the right. They're a group of about 80 family members from Kansas who are absolutely nuts. "

DONEdone, in a nutshell, for a majority of the posters here, you are correct.... myself included in the batch, at times. This is why the local rag holds political articles, (& maybe a few other critical ones), well past their time, in the "Most Commented" area.

You've hit the nail squarely on the head, my friend. When I've suggested to family or friends, to get on here & join in on the fun, I'm told the very exact same thing, by them all. "

Relax DONEdone, I wasn't implying that you're our friend Doh. Those that post on here know all of the names he regularly uses. His style is unmistakable, even though he tries to disguise his style, the old Doh always come through. My commenting on this issue is merely to get him going, and it alwasy does.

Stop posting news as primary sources, use it to back up your original points. Potter you are quick to throw out the racism card. and neo con.....well what can I say... oh yeah Ron, bluedog, and other conservatives make points, you just yell rhetoric.

Conservatives want people to be Christian so they make policies forcing people to live under those morals. Liberals want religion out of government. Anarchist just want people to worship at home and not force anything on anyone.

Conservatives tell a homeless person "get a job you bum", Liberals give money to the homeless and try to fix his situation, Anarchists want to be able to share what ever they have to help. Socialist want to force job security through strengthening small business and creating more government jobs to prevent homelessness.

Conservatives deem something inappropriate they try to get it banned, Liberals deem something inappropriate they ban it under the guise of "political correctness". Social-Libertarian deem something inappropriate they just don't read, look, listen or feel what they don't like.

Conservatives see money they try to horde as much as possible. Liberals see money they share a tiny bit. Socialist see money and they wonder what can we do with it to better society.

Conservatives don't want teen pregnancy they scare the S*** out of them with scare tactics and repeating the word abstinence. Liberals don't want teen pregnancy they say you should wait but allowing kids to get protection if they need it. Anarchists see the reality and just want kids to be safe.

Where do you draw the line? "

I agree. The insane hatred spewed by MSNBC and the leftist media in general toward good, partiotic Tea Party members and average tax paying citizens in general is just beyond pale. Thankfully, reputable news outlets like FOX and the Wall Street Journal actually report the news, unlike their biased couterparts that churn out propaganda and spike news reports that are unfavorable to leftists and their brainwashed toadies. Maybe Chris Matthews will interview some bimbo like Janeane Garafolo, and they can share leg tingles while viewing a video clip of Obama stuttering in front of his teleprompter then hack into anyone who doesn't share their leg tingles and girly crush on the One. Talk radio and the blogoshpere have also helped break the left's lock on news media, and with leftist propaganda outlets like the NY Times and NBC losing sponsors, audience, and money, it's obvious that the US public is tired of being lied to and misled. There are some diehard leftists out there who want to silence news they don't like, but that's typical of totalitarian lickspittles and those who are unintelligent and ignorant. "

The fact that his comments were correct does not matter though. McNabb and those of the likes of ESPN were giving McNabb all the credit, and not the team. Also remember the Super Bowl, Chicago Vs. the Colts. All you heard was how great it was to see two black coaches going against each other. The truth is it doesn't matter if the coaches and players are black, white, green, red, orange, or any other color. "
