Presentation to focus on early history of Illinois cattle and hog drives

DECATUR — A presentation on cattle and hog drives in the early days of Illinois is planned by Bill Steinbacher-Kemp.

It will focus on central Illinois farmers and drovers who before railroads walked large herds of cattle and hogs to meatpacking centers such as Cincinnati and Chicago. The presentation will be at 2 p.m.Oct. 18 at the Rock Springs Nature Center. Admission is free.

Bill Steinbacher-Kemp has been the librarian and archivist for the McLean County Museum of History in Bloomington for the past five years. Previously he worked at Milner Library at Illinois State University for eight years. He has a graduate degree in history from Illinois State University and a graduate degree in public affairs from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Rock Springs Nature Center is located on the southwestern edge of Decatur. To get to Rock Springs Center from Decatur go south on Illinois Route 48 and turn right onto Rock Springs Road. Watch for signs.

Plenty of parking is available. Please note that an alternate route to Rock Springs Nature Center via Wyckles Road from Decatur is closed due to bridge repairs over the Sangamon River.
