LETTER: Government reigning in private sector blunders

CONNIE MANES, Mattoon

Deloris Cliburn (Sept. 21 letter): “It’s frightening to think that this government is in a control-mode. It’s concerning to me that there seems to be a take-over mentality. A takeover of banks, health care, the auto industries, insurance companies and the collapse of small businesses. And if there would be an ‘Energy’ take over, like some have suggested, this would be dangerous for our independence and our freedom. It appears that our Freedoms could be at stake.”

I think it’s more frightening to see Wall Street, our banks, automobile and insurance companies taking control of the way we live our lives than most anything the government can do to us during a two or four year term.

At least with respects to the government, those leaders can be and will be voted out of office if they screw up; whereas CEO’s, bank presidents and owners of insurance companies can dictate what is successful and what is not, who gets a loan and who does not, who gets health care and who does not for decades if they so choose.

It’s about time somebody reigned in these out of control entities in, even if only temporarily.

Wikipedia definition:

“A monopoly exists when a specific individual or an enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it.”

Just as we see our water, electric and gas companies regulated because every human being’s life is affected by the way those companies are run, we should also regulate any other industry or company that affects the majority of Americans.

It’s kind of like a parent that is supporting a child’s college education. You give them the freedom to handle their financial affairs with the money they are given; but if they prove to be unable to do so, the parents must step in before losing more money.

Banks were making risky investments losing my and your money. The health industry is currently controlling what kind of health care we receive. A company that controls a quarter million jobs mishandled their products.

You prefer that kind of “freedom” to one that has a few safe guards to it?

You can stop a politician by voting them out if results from their actions are not seen; it’s much harder to stop those “out of control” businesses, banks and insurance companies.

" You trust the politicians and bureaucrats who pressured the banks into giving the easy loans that created all the bad debt. The government-sponsored companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac then took on all those bad loans to help spread around the bad paper. Now that the whole thing has blown up, the politicians and bureaucrats point their fingers in the direction of Wall Street to play the blame game, telling the people it will all be better after we "control" them. Keep watching the marionettes, Connie--if you squint, you can't even see the strings! "

Sarbanes Oxley and other legislation/bureaucracy has ALREADY been created to address those situations, and many good companies now creak under the burden of complying with them. When are we going to realize that productive corporations contribute to our GDP, and blustering demagogue politicians are parasites? Do we really have to resent everybody who is successful? "

So rather than demanding "government", "reign in on the out of control", how about demanding ethics and ethical dealings from everyone, regardless of their "walk of life"? "

People (or at least most unenlightened people) will do what is in their immediate self interest. Ethical and moral behavior requires people to develop a long term view of their lives and a broad view of the world, enlightened selfinterest. When the churches fail to teach these concepts (appropriate behavior) than government has no choice but to step in and regulate behavior. "

All you have to do is look at the number of congressmen/senators who have been around for 20-30 years while our government makes terrible mistakes. And add to that, have you EVER seen a government program end? Each year the base of government expands and we find a larger % of our earnings go to fund these expansions with declining service. I vote NO on socialism! "

" A European intelligence official said U.S., Israeli and German intelligence services began looking for a hidden site in 2002, after an analysis of Iran's nuclear procurements -- clandestine and overt -- found purchases that couldn't be explained by the needs of its known facilities. "We knew the site existed, but at that time we didn't know where," the official said.

Mr. Obama first learned about the Qom site in an intelligence briefing during the transition after his election. Over the past year, "our confidence increased with regard to the precise purpose of this site," a U.S. official said.

In July, Mr. Obama asked his staff to prepare a detailed briefing in advance of this week's U.N. and Group of 20 meetings. No decision was made about when the briefing would be presented, officials said.

But with Oct. 1 talks with Iran set, White House officials wanted to be in a position to use the evidence as leverage either for negotiations or proceeding down the "pressure track," a senior administration official said.
AP-

But of course Fox news, in their daily assault of the president, used their usually line about Obama trying to use this issue as a political ploy inferring that he knew about it all along, funny they failed to mention that it was known about for most of Bush years. Tell us how he'd have loved to have been able to demonstrate his great courage in combat in Vietnam, but they just wouldn't let him, darn it. Tell us how heroic he was as he sat paralyzed in a children's classroom when the U.S. was attacked, and when he flew around the country all that day in a panic, hiding, while Cheney ran the nation. Tell us how every time his daddy's Saudi pals had to bail out one of his failed business ventures, it was always somebody else's fault. Tell us how the disaster caused by his stupid, immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq is always going to be somebody else's fault, too " Obama's now, maybe? Tell us how Bush went to birthday parties while he let New Orleans drown.
Tell us again how no American has to worry about Bush's secret police spying on them, as long as they have nothing whatsoever to hide. Tell us how he always says what he means and means what he says, even when he doesn't and even when no one can understand what he's saying because it's so astoundingly stupid. Don't you ever get tried of being so loudly wrong, Seedy?
In 2006, children from Gulf Coast states serenaded First Lady Laura Bush with a song praising George W. Bush, Congress and Federal Emergency Management Agency for their response to of all things Hurricane Katrina, one of Bush's signature failures.
The event took place at that year's White House Easter Egg Roll and included roughly 100 children from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. All reported in the Wall Street Journal, Seedy.
Also, officials in Stockton, CA, actually NAMED A SCHOOL after Bush, an unprecedented move to lavish honor on a sitting president.
You didn't protest the George W. Bush Elementary School, Seedy, so I assume you'd have no objection to someone giving us the Barack Obama Elementary School, right? You're not a glaring, ranting hypocrite, surely, are you? LOL. "

If government invents for itself the Power (one not "defined and limited" in the Constitution) to force us to buy a product, even from the Private Sector, one of your Rights will be destroyed. I am wondering why the author of this letter can be bothered by the Wall Street thugs and big business and not seem to be bothered by the fact that our new administration is made up of many of the people she is bothered by.
Personally, I am bothered by all of it, whether it can be credited to the Bush admin or the current one. It is irrelevant to blame a specific party when both major parties are inflicted with the same disease of self-interest and personal gain.

Chief of Staff, Rham Emanuel: former Wall Street executive.
Dept. of Defense member, William Lynn: former top lobbyist for Raytheon.
Secretary of Treasury, Timothy Geithner: former President of NY Federal Reserve.
Treasury Chief of Staff, Mark Patterson: ex-lobbyist Goldman Sachs.
Head of CIA, Leon Panetta: "King of Wall Street Lobbyists" (nice title).
Dpt. Health & Human Srvcs Head, Tom Daschel: former top lobbyist for major health care firms.
Add all of the insultingly titled "czars" who are nothing more than presidentially-appointed special interest lobbyists.

Considering the recent employment histories of our new administration, I think it is reasonable to believe they are not going to be much help in "reigning in these out-of control entities". On the contrary, I think it is reasonable to believe they still serve big businesses and personal agendas for their own gain...and that can do more damage than can be "easily" undone by voting them out of office.

There is something more than a little troubling to me when I hear, on the campaign trail of Obama that he will do away with lobbyists and special interest groups, and within hours of being elected to the highest authority in the land, turn right around and hire lobbyists and special interest advocates. I fully believe the dangers to our economy instituted by the power- wielding special interest groups and Wall Street lobbyists who are now in political positions of power are not going to be easily undone if they are left to their own, greedy desires. The political double-speak of our President is better than some of the previous politicians' and is therefore, more dangerous in that he is actually convincing voters that he has our nations best interests at heart. Not much could be farther from the truth and can be proven by his actions as opposed to his words.
I am not writing to disagree with this letters author necessarily, but am more concerned with whether or not the people of our nation realize what and who we have in power positions at the White House. "

To answer your question, Bps: just like it was wrong to have school kids sing the praises of G Bush, it's wrong to have them sing the praises of Obama.
------------------

The Bush event:

1. Took place at the White House Easter Egg Roll- a political event

2. The students were a mixed group of 100 from three different states volunteers from politically connected adults, not specific second grade students from the same school.

3. The participation of those children was certainly not part of a school mandated curriculum.

Singing Praises of Obama event:

1. The Burlington Township School District has confirmed in writing this was an OFFICAL SCHOOL EVENT ON SCHOOL PROPERTY, BY STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL, not a political event.

2. The students second graders of the school were organized by their TEACHER and the song was written by an educator at the school as part of the school day curriculum during Black History Month.

3. The participation of the children was mandatory as part of the days curriculum, not volunteers.

IN BOTH CASES THE USE OF CHILDREN FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES WAS WRONG!

BUT I WOULD PREFER VOLUNTEER CHILDREN SING ABOUT THANKS TO THE COUNTRY AT A POLITICAL EVENT, NOT SINGING THE GREATNESS OF A SINGLE LEADER AT A SCHOOL MANDATED EVENT.

Now as to which was the worse villain:

My vote would be for the individuals at a public school who didnt have the sense to put together a proper lesson plan,

Instead they created one that at the very least creates the perception of the indoctrination of children in the worship of the President as a single individual.

After all, Teachers as public employees are supposed to be politically neutral in their lesson plans, arent they Harry?

Of course I am not a professional on curriculum as you have stated you are.

So which of the TWO WRONGS would you say are worse Harry? "

" Bernie Goldberg, conservative media critic, had the following to say to Bill O'Reilly regarding Fox's coverage of the so called tea parties:

Sometimes Fox brings on the criticism itself. There are some programs on Fox that are not only not fair balanced - they're commentary shows, they don't have to be - but they brag about how fair and balanced they are. They don't cover rallies and tea parties; they cheerlead rallies and tea parties. And as a journalist I am totally against that. And to that extent the criticism is legitimate. By and large it's not.
O'Reilly defended Fox News by saying it's no different than editorial pages promoting Earth Day and protecting the environment. Goldberg replied that his main point is:

Don't pretend to be objective... Don't go on the air and say these tea parties are a cross section of America. They are not a cross section. Don't pretend to be a journalist if you're not a journalist.

Ouch! Goldberg can usually be counted on to defend the journalistic style of the folks at Fox. I guess the tea party promotion (disguised as news coverage) was too much even for him.

There has been a lot of talk about this recession exhibiting a very slow recovery. Many of these discussions highlight the severity of the recession as the key cause for a slow recovery. In reality, the historical pattern has been just the reverse, the worse the economic decline, the stronger the economic recovery.

Fidelity economist Dirk Hofschire shows the pattern of economic recovery six months and 12 months after an economic bottom. "The harder it falls, the bigger it bounces" seems to be the appropriate motto.
Bob Johnson economist/ Morningstar

Oh my, what will the disgruntled whiners and losers have to say when the economy finally does turn around? As pointed out by Mr. Johnson, the recovery should be strong, especially considering how bad the Bush created collapse was. One thing for sure is they won't be willing to give Obama any credit for it. Signs of a turn around have been showing up, but of course the right side is ignoring them, and only are willing to focus on the unemployment numbers. Some economists have suggested that when manufacturers have depleted all of their stocks, hiring and recalls will set in, and will no doubt lead the way to consumer confidence to spend and a growing economy will be the result.

But then what does a noted economist like Mr. Johnson know, we have our own experts right here on this very site, that seems to have all the answers. "

And don't forget ole Blue Dog, Neo, Stanley, and old school among others. There's been so many that I've forgotten some of them. I guess that after getting busted for about the 20th time, it's time for a new one to show up. I still vote for Sybil, as that seems to cover the whole bunch. lol! "

LCoO- whats wrong are the questions poor ol Bps been asking you too hard lately?

A few simple questions over the last week or so and you almost answered one. Then you go into your old habits. Pontificate, spread fertilizer, misdirection, personal attacks with just a little real content once in awhile.

Sorry, I didnt mean to send you off into a tizzy.

My goodness, it was obvious that with things going so badly for your beloved Dummy-crats that you have had to try to distract your fellow posters with meaningless drivel about fox, past crooks in power and as many huff-n-posts as you could find.

Now here you are again trying to start a name-flame-war.

Dohbaugh unless you are counting your supposed physic college professor friend you drug up, the only one I have ever seen truly busted as you put it was you, and from the mouth of old HP himself.

Tell you what HP/fb/ Dohbaugh /etc, you think I am Doh, or 7xx, or whoever else, knock yourself out.

My posts will still continue to turn up from time to time and they are just from little old me, poor ol Bps.

But here is an idea, why dont you actually use those giant intellects you keep telling everybody you have and actually try to address at least one of the several open questions addressed in the thread to you that you are ducking. "

Clarificatin requested HP- Is this before 2010 or after?

It will most probably make a huge difference on who your retorical question is addressed to. "

Nope, just in a real good mode tonight.

Whats wrong Harry, you just bored?

Got to wait to the beginning of the month to refill your meds?

Ran out of intellectual capital?

There are so many good topics that could be discussed and you want to play name-flame-games again.

Maybe I can give you some ideas to help you out.

Heres a good one:

Maybe you could explain why President Obama who is adamantly against off shore drilling for oil for our country authorized loaning 2 Billion of our taxpayer dollars to a Brazilian Oil Exploration Company whos largest stockholder is George Soros to drill for oil for the Chinese off the coast of Brazil.

Dont like that one, try this one:

Dummy-crats blocked the amendment requiring the publication of the health care bills going through the senate 72 hours before they are voted on.

Why do you think they are so afraid of the people having a chance to read their handiwork before it is voted on?

One last one:

Why is the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee blocking the efforts to subpoena the remaining records of Countrywide's VIP loan program?

You remember this one dont you? This was the program where the congress-critters who oversaw the committees responsible for the regulations and control of banking got all of the sweet-heart, lowball loans.

There, that should give you a start towards an idea for a post.

Glad I could help you out. "

" Neocon the problem with your suggestion demanding people deal ethically with others (and govt. stay out) is that it won't work and YOU know that. "

Dang it! I can't find ONE WORD in this that I disagree with. Well put!!!! "
