Baby's Market aims to offer unique items for little ones

CHARLESTON — Baby care and gift items, cloth diapers, nursing supplies and more are available at the new Baby’s Market shop.

Owner Sarah Knierim opened her shop Aug. 31 at 704 Jackson Ave. next to Calliope Court, off the southeast corner of the courthouse square in Charleston.

Cloth diapers were part of the inspiration for the shop. Knierim said she obtained cloth diapers for her children, Selah, 2, and Gloria, 1, and was pleasantly surprised by how easy the diapers are to use. She said there were few options for buying a wide assortment of cloth diapers in the area, so she decided to fill this need.

“There are so many varieties of cloth diapers. It is easy to find one that will work for your lifestyle,” Knierim said. “The days of safety pins are gone.”

Knierim said parents can save money by purchasing reusable cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers, adding that some types of cloth diapers can be used with disposable liners. She said cloth diapers are better for the environment, protect babies from harsh chemicals, and are available in many styles.

Style was also part of the inspiration for the Baby’s Market. Knierim said she wanted to offer a place where parents can purchase stylish and trendy clothing for their babies. The shop offers reversible outfits, dresses that can be worn as shirts as babies grow, soft-soled shoes, hand-knit sweaters and bibs, and more.

“I like shopping, so now I can shop so that other people can shop,” Knierim said.

Baby’s Market also carries glass and stainless steel bottles, sippy cups, nursing and maternity bras, nursing covers, diaper bags, hooded towels, wash cloths, swaddle blankets, Melissa & Doug wooden toys, teas and other expectant mother products, baby carriers, and more.

Knierim opened her shop in the former Donna Cleaners storefront, which her husband, Seth, renovated.

Baby’s Market is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday each week. For more information, call the shop at 549-9322 or go online to www.shopbabysmarket.com.

" Scrubbing the cloth diapers on a small washboard is fun, NOT. I didn't own a washer so learned the art of washing on a board and those diapers were snow white hanging out on the clothesline.
The diaper liners were invented just when had first child and did SAVE a lot of work. When last child was born the disposables came into being, thank the LORD because I worked and saved me a lot of headaches and babysitter as well.
Neighbors would comment on how SHE HAS HER DIAPERS ON LINE AT 6A.M. Yep sure did, had get to job. I mostly used the toss diapers when going shopping or on the road visiting relatives and at homes of the relatives. The GOOD OLE DAYS. "
