Willy becomes first women to win 10K

ARCOLA – In the 32nd annual Arcola Broom Corn Festival race history was made Saturday as Urbana’s Cathleen Willy become the first woman to win both the men’s and women’s divisions in the 10K (6.2 miles) race. Willy won with a time of thirty eight minutes, 36 seconds, beating the second place finisher and overall men’s champion William Gillespie of Savoy by 50 seconds. Willy bested the second place finisher overall in the women’s category, Charleston’s Cindy McGrady by 3:05.

Although Willy was the first woman to win the 10K race, her time did not set the woman’s record as Windsor’s Becky Curry ran a 38:07 in 1997.

Arthur’s Michael Kingery won the 30-39 age category with a time of 39:40, while Charleston’s David McGrady won the 50-59 category in 43:45 and Lerna’s Rick Riccio, who was third last year in his age group, won the 60 and older category with a time 50:19, 1:45 faster than last year.

Arcola’s Sue Stout defended her title in the 50 and older category with a time of 61:34.

In the 5K men’s division Tony Manna defending his title by running six seconds faster than last year, finishing in 17:53. Manna is an Arcola graduate now living in Zionsville, Ind. He beat out another Arcola graduate, Any Gilbert, now of Chicago, by 15 seconds. Last year the two finished fist and second as well with Manna winning by six seconds. Gilbert won the 21-29 age group last year and this year won the 30-39 age group with a time of 18:08.

Arcola’s Brock Miller won the 15-20 age group with a time and was the only other area runner to win their age category in the 5K men’s division.

Arcola’s Bill Klopfleish, who was third in the 70 and older category continues to be the only one to have run (10K or 5K) in all 32 races.

Sullivan track and field coach Kali Taylor won the 5K women’s division with a time of 21:05, a full 1:25 faster than her time last year when she won the 21-29 age category. Taylor beat last year’s winner Rebekah Hopkins of Camargo by 53 seconds. Hopkins won the 30-39 age category.

Arcola’s Melissa Conlin defended her title in the 40-49 age category by running a 24:17 and Oakland’s Mary Jordan won the 50-59 age category. Arlene Gamble of Rockport, Maine defended her title in the 60-69 category by running a 30:02.
