Prep Spotlight: Jon Stallons
By BRIAN NIELSEN, Sports Editor bnielsen@jg-tc.com
JON STALLONS
Charleston football
Senior
Position: Offensive tackle
Notable: Second-team All-Apollo Conference last year
Brian Nielsen: Congratulations on last week’s win. What was your favorite part of the game?
Jon Stallons: When the ball got handed off or the pass just watching guys run once they were free.
BN: Last year you guys helped Mario Johnson rack up some big rushing numbers. Now it looks like you could have a good passing game. Do you like run blocking or pass protection better?
JS: Run blocking is always fun. I enjoy making that one play to get your guy free. Pass blocking is nice if you need a breather but I would say I like run blocking, to get those big plays out there.”
BN: What would be some goals you have for the rest of this season?
JS: To do the best we can as a senior class to get the job done.
BN: Are you looking to play college football?
JS: I would enjoy playing college ball. If I would get accepted somewhere it would be phenomenal.
BN: What schools are you thinking?
JS: I do enjoy Eastern because it is in town. I probably wouldn’t roam out of state. Just any local school
BN: Do you have an idea of what you need to do this year so college coaches are impressed when they get your game films?
JS: I need to execute, get the job done correctly. If you don’t do it right, if it’s a half-baked play, it’s not good. You have to know what you’re doing and get it done.
BN: Anything particularly you need to improve?
JS: I definitely need to improve on my reach blocking. Coach (Kaleb) Carter and coach (Tyler) Hanner are helping me out with that.
BN: What did you do to get ready for this season?
JS: We’ve been working for nine months, weight lifting and conditioning. Once conditioning was over William Glidewell would go running. We’d run a mile and then run a cool down lap in between.
BN: You moved here a few years ago right?
JS: We moved here when I was in third grade. I lived back in Ohio
BN: So are you an Ohio State fan or Illinois fan or what?
JS: It’s a big tie right there. I grew up here so I have the feel of an Illinois fan but I have family in Ohio.
BN: So your favorite?
JS: I don’t have a main team that I go for. But I’ll watch some of the Big Ten schools.
BN: We’ll have a comment from coach Halsey about you. What would you have to say about him?
JS: I definitely couldn’t have made it here without him. He’s the one who pushed me here and I’m grateful for that.
BN: He’s your line coach as well as head coach right? Does that make it easier or harder on the O-line?
JS: That’s a good question. Sometimes it could be both really. You’re so used to him being there you get comfortable but if you slack off you know you’re going to in trouble.
BN: Besides football, what are some of your other interests?
JS: I just love being around people. I love socializing. It’s a good thing for me.
BN: How about long-range goals? What do you want to be doing in 10 or 15 years?
JS: I really don’t know. I’ve kind of been undecided about that. Hopefully, a scholarship will take me and lead me to something that I’d enjoy.
COACH’S TAKE
Charleston football coach Brian Halsey said: “Jon is a big old fellow that walked into the high school three years ago and couldn’t walk and chew gum. He has worked so hard and ends up being a three-year starter on offense and all-conference. He’s excellent young man, terrific a role model and a joy to be around. He’s a tremendous leader for our program. He deserves everything he gets because he’s worked so hard. He’s well versed. He’s in the chorus, he’s in the musical and he’s just an all-around great student athlete.”
