Rasmussen dealership in Mattoon to close

MATTOON – A 52-year-old automobile business is closing later this month, just months after General Motors used the bankruptcy process to sever the dealership’s franchise agreement.

Bill Rasmussen Chevrolet told employees this week that Sept. 25 will be the dealership’s last day in business. Until then, the dealership will continue with vehicle sales, service and body work. All those services will end at the closing date, Bill Rasmussen Jr. said on Thursday.

It was an AMC Javelin, Red, six banger, I wanted the 67 Chevelle with 327, but there was no way dad was gonna let me have that. It was a 69 Javelin in 1971, 2 years old and $950. Had a floor mounted 8 track tape deck. Of the 9 cars I have owned in my life, 4 came from there. "

" GM and Chrysler may be on life supports, but without government involvement there would be a lot more more closed down plants and empty showroom doors all over the country. Are the critics of government intervention suggesting that's a better idea. I'm betting those millions of folks who still have a job would not agree with that. I see a lot of criticism directed toward the the president for getting involved with GM and Chrysler, but not many suggestions for alternative ideas. Considering that every position in automotive manufacturing spawns 7 more jobs, I think Obama made the right decision. "

" What does not sound right Rohn? I went to school from 8 - 3 and worked from 5 - 9 Mon-Fri and 9 - 4 on Sat and Sun. That is going to school full time and working almost full time. Anything over 35 hours per week is considered full time and I worked approx 30 hours per week so that is ALMOST full time. I was 17 years old. I had a good work ethic. So what exactly does not sound right to you? "

While I am no fan at all of the Obama administration, I don't really think we can blame them for the dealerships having to close down. If anyone deserves the blame here it is the "BIG WIGS" of General Motors and the UAW for running GM into the ground. They are lucky that they are in business at all and that is only thanks to the Admin.

I did not and still do not support the bail out of the Auto industry but if they did not do that then alot more dealerships would be closing than there already are. It is a sad truth. "

Harry Potter wrote on Sep 11, 2009 5:06 PM:

" When it comes to the auto bailout, what was the alternative? Should we have let Chrysler and GM go under? Can you imagine what the unemployment numbers would be if both GM and Chrysler had gone under. Don't forget how many other jobs are indirectly effected by each auto manufacturing position. Obama didn't create GM and Chrysler's woes, it was a combination of two factors, as Texas T points out, but he sure is taking a lot of flak for trying to save it.

I look at the auto bailout along the lines of taking Castor oil. It may taste bad but the end result usually makes it worthwhile. "

" Yeap, None of those stories of buying the first car sound right .

Last time I check, the law has not changed and has been the on the books in 1981 & 1971. That would be, You must be 18 (legal age) to enter into a contract. So if you were underthe age of 18, you could not sign a sales agreement and you could not sign loan papers, both of which are contracts.

Liar, Liar, pants on fire. "

" What bailout? GM & Chrysler received huge government money and it all went down the drain, both companies still FAILED...BOTH BANKRUPT!

The only thing Obama did was make sure he has control of the Board of each automaker, and then handed it to the UAW. He didn't save anything, both companies went under and shareholders LOST EVERYTHING. Now the local dealers are losing it all. The whole process cost the country 100,000+ jobs.

What did Obama save?? Nothing! How do you like your CHANGE now?? "

What does not sound right? Only the fact that you have to be 18 to enter into a contract. Sales agreement and Loans are contracts. A person can not buy a car under the age of 18. "

" lets be honest, it doesnt matter who's fault it is. the posters are determined to make it into obamas fault or wrongdoing. just as there can be no article on here that cannot be tied to some political trash. not all of the worlds problems are related to our present government. the key to happiness in life when it comes to blame is simple. when your wrong, admit it and move on. make change, and strive for better results. not sit and point fingers at the people whose policies you least agree with. NONE of the elected officials are honest! the majority of them are lawyers or have studied law at some point. forgive me if im wrong, but arent most jokes about attorneys about how crooked and unscrupulous they are? then why do we keep electing these people to office?
i know why,so the people here will have something to argue about. the crisis for auto industry didnt just happen when obama took over. it has been building for years. if our former president had been concerned for the citizens of this country, instead of his and his cronies pockets, we would not be in this shape! but as usual with the financial elite, smoke and mirrors, mumbo jumbo about this or that, and it is somebody's fault, but not the ones that actually are responsible. there is no way that the elite are going to let a black man fix the problem. just give him the wreckage from the past, and blame him when he cant fix what the other admin. broke! WAKE UP AMERICA, THE LAWYERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR SITUATION! "

Apparently you're not up to speed on this issue, mhs82. Part of the agreement was that both companies had to file for bankruptcy BEFORE the bailout was allowed to go through. Like most Obama critics you got it wrong.
Wanna talk about Obama's birth certificate or death panels next? Or how about Joe Wilson's lie? "
