Athletes of the Week

Each week the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier is to feather the top local athletes in any sport.

Shannon Boone, Shelbyville volleyball, 6-0, outside hitter

Boone helped Shelbyville to its second straight sweep of Mattoon with one ace, eight kills, five digs and a block as the Lady Rams won 25-19, 27-25 Thursday at Mattoon. Boone also had four aces, 5 kills and three digs in a 25-15, 25-20 win over Taylorville in the season-opener Tuesday.

Cody Boarman, senior, Shelbyville-Stewardson-Strasburg football, WR/DB

Boarman, who transferred back to Shelbyville after two years at Neoga, caught touchdown passes of 20, 68 and 20 yards from Caine Cloe and returned a kickoff 85 yards for another score. Boarman also booted two extra points as he accounted for 26 of the 28 points for the Rams in a 32-28 non-conference loss to Meridian.

Seth Brewer, senior, Casey-Westfield football, 6-1, 183 pounds E/DE

Brewer was on the receiving end of three touchdown passes as Casey won its 22nd straight LIC game and 23 consecutive regular season contest Friday at Casey. Brewer finished with five receptions for 114 yards and the three touchdown passes of 17, 49 and 29 yards. Casey, coached by Keith Sinclair, improved to 2-0 and is to play host to Flora Friday in another LIC game.

Joe Calio, junior, Mattoon cross country

Calio began the week by winning a dual meet with Charleston in a personal best time of 15 minutes, 54 seconds Tuesday and followed that by winning the 13-team Charleston Invitational by running 14 seconds faster, finishing in 15:40, winning by 43 seconds over the second place finisher.

Adam Drake, senior, Charleston football, 6-2, 170, WR/DB

Starting by catching 25-yard pass from Levi Ebbert on Charleston’s first offensive play, Drake pretty well clinched the Trojans’ 42-27 win over Olney by taking a reverse handoff on fourth-and-7 and running for a 41-yard touchdown with 4:19 remaining. Drake finished the game with eight receptions for 152 yards, intercepted an Olney pass to set up his fourth-quarter touchdown and set up another touchdown with a 42-yard punt return.

Reynae Hutchinson, senior, Mattoon volleyball, 6-0 outside hitter

After losing the season-opener to Shelbyville 25-19, 27-25 Hutchinson, who had one ace, 12 kills and nine digs in the match helped the Lady Wave win its own tournament Saturday, taking home MVP honors. Hutchinson had 20 aces, 46 kills, 31 digs, 1 block and 5 assists in the five matches. She had the most kills and digs on the day for Mattoon, who won the championship with a 25-16, 23-25, 16-14 over Warrensburg-Latham.

Brett Livix, senior, Casey-Westfield football, 5-9, 155 pounds QB/DB

Livix helped Casey-Westfield, the No. 6 team in Class 2A, improved to 2-0 by throwing for four touchdowns. Livix was 12-of-17 for 246 yards with no interceptions. He threw a 17-yard TD to Seth Brewer to start a 20-point second quarter, which also included touchdown passes of 54 yards to Chris Unzicker and 49 yards to Brewer in the third quarter as Casey downed Red Hill 41-7 in a Little Illini Conference game Friday at Sinclair-Vidoni Field in Casey.
