Pool days about to end after cool, wet summer

CHARLESTON — Saturday and Sunday will be the last days of a swimming season in which unseasonably cool weather has taken a heavy toll on attendance at the Rotary Community Aquatic Center.

The city’s public swimming facility is scheduled to be open noon-4 p.m. Saturday and 1-7 p.m. Sunday, weather and attendance levels permitting. The adjacent Putt-N-Swing batting cage and miniature golf facility is set to be open noon-4 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday before it too closes for the season. The facilities are closing early Saturday due to the nearby Charleston football game.

Director Brian Jones of the Charleston Parks and Recreation Department noted that the weather forecast for the weekend is a high of 80 degrees or a little more. Labor Day weekends in Charleston are often swelteringly hot, but apparently not this year.

“That has kind of been the story of the summer. The weather has kind of been strange,” Jones said, adding it has been one of the coolest summers he has experienced during his time with the recreation department.

Jones said the swimming facility closed nine days this summer when air temperatures dropped below 65 degrees, when rain fell, or when attendance dropped below 15 swimmers. He said the combination of unseasonably cool temperatures and rainy weather is a “bad formula” for attendance.

The swimming facility did start the season on a good note. Jones said facility took in 12,187 admissions in June of this year as opposed to 10,694 in June 2008.

“We had nine or 10 days of hot weather in June that really helped,” Jones said.

Jones said unseasonably cool and wet weather arrived in July, when attendance dropped to 5,862 from a level of 9,212 in July 2008.

The recreation director said attendance was 3,713 in August as the weather remained cool, but the swimming facility was only open on weekends after the Charleston school year started in mid-August. He these “school hours” were a cost cutting measure. Attendance was 5,221 in August 2008, when the facility was open seven days a week.

“We thank everyone who came out and used the facility this summer. We will hopefully will have better weather next year,” Jones said.

So what rules does the Charleston pool that the Mattoon doesn't, bob?

Did they just happen to kick your kid our for bad behavior? Just wondering.

I've noticed that parents who don't like certain rules usually are the parents of poorly behaved kids. Not saying that this is the case with you bob, but I really would like to know which of the rules at Charleston do you consider STUPID?

You make some excellent points, devilishangel (good post, as usual for you). "

" Something is keeping people away. Is it the weather or the management? I have known several child care groups who have transported to Lytle from Charleston because the management there would work with them.

How about a side-by-side report on Lytle attendance this year. I would love to see a similar report on the profit/loss of both pools. "

" Grandkids like either pool just so there is snacks, water, and boys for the girls and girls for the boys. An umbrella and sunscreen for the ole fxxt.
The employees are nice to us. Rotary enforces the horsing around and fewer serious injuries. Hope next year is good for both pools. Not much else to do. "

" Responsible I too would like to see a side by side comparison of the two pools. Ive never been to the one in Charleston, I've went to Lytle twice in the 7 years I've lived in Mattoon, Im very lucky that my apartment complex has a pool so my kids and I swim there all summer long, and I have a scholarship membership for my family at the YMCA so the kids and I swim there all year round! Both of these options are nice for my family since they cost a lot less than it would for me and both kids to go to Lytle Im not sure what the Charleston Pool charges but the last time we went to Lytle it was like 9 bucks to get in and that did not buy anything to drink or any snacks for the kids and I was told that "no outside food n drinks are allowed" and was also told if I left to go to the car for bottled water etc that I'd have to pay to get back into the pool! Haven't went back since, especially since if we're at home or the Y we can get out and get back in during pool hours as much as we need or want to. "

Try saying that five times real fast.
LOL! "

" Rules are for stupid parents.
Even then the parents in denial their kids would DO SOMETHING WRONG. HEHE.
Some leave thei kids if some othe parent there to supervise, but some of them leave and kids aren't supervised. "

Jim1969 wrote on Sep 6, 2009 11:56 PM:

" With the way the weather patterns have been the last several years maybe Mattoon and Charleston both should consider keeping the pools open in the evenings and weekends later in the year. At least through September. Seems we have had more hot and very warm days in the 9th month than we have had in July and August lately. "
