Coles historical society offers antique appraisals Saturday

CHARLESTON — An ice cream social and antique appraisal fair will be held Saturday by the Coles County Historical Society.

Appraiser Ed Walker will help visitors learn more about their antiques during the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the historic Dudley House, 895 Seventh St. in Charleston. Visitors will be served on a first come, first served basis.

People also are welcome to observe the appraisals, which will take place inside the house.

Walker is chairman of the art department and curator of the Birks Museum at Millikin University in Decatur, and is also an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers. He will offer appraisals Saturday solely for educational purposes, but will provide information on how antique owners can get official appraisals.

Educational appraisals will be available for two items for $20 and a third item item at no additional charge if time permits. The historical society will share in one half of these proceeds.

Retired Eastern Illinois University political science professor John Faust will play ragtime piano music during part of the day. The “Many Careers, One Conviction: Tilford E. Dudley (1907-1990)” exhibit about the life of the Charleston native, New Deal lawyer, labor advocate and preservationist will be displayed throughout the day.

Two Flowers catering will provide ice cream for Saturday’s event. Donors for the event include the Picket Fence, Coldwell Banker Classic Real Estate, Brainard Law Office, and Bill and Rebecca Thurn.
