FutureGen Alliance elects new board chairman

MATTOON — The FutureGen Alliance has elected Steven Winberg of CONSOL Energy as its next chairman of the board of directors.

Winberg replaces Paul Thompson of Louisville, Ky., whose term has ended.

“Under Paul’s leadership, the Alliance weathered some rocky political storms, but because of his contributions FutureGen is back on track with a renewed partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy,” said Winberg. “It is an honor to assume this position at such a critical juncture in the process, and I’m looking forward to continuing the good work Paul, his predecessors and our colleagues have all done to date to realize this historic project that will revolutionize the power industry.”

FutureGen Alliance and the Energy Department this week announced the signing of a new cooperative agreement, to cover preliminary design activities in support of the project.

“The next several months represent a critical time in the realization of FutureGen’s goal to build and operate the facility in Mattoon,” said FutureGen Alliance Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Mudd. “Steve’s background in energy R&D provides a perfect fit for the Alliance as we enter discussions with DOE and come to agreement on a final facility design that will reduce costs and technical risks. I look forward to working with Steve and the DOE to reach these goals and to break ground on the facility in 2010.”

Winberg is the vice president for CONSOL Energy Inc. Research & Development, located in the Pittsburgh area.

He has over 30 years of experience in the energy industry, ranging from power generation equipment design and installation to use of innovative fuels.

Winberg has a bachelor’s in Nuclear Engineering from SUNY Maritime College and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.

Additionally, Chris Ellefson of BHP Billiton, an Australia-based company, will serve as vice chair.

Thompson, a senior vice president of energy services at E.ON U.S., will continue to serve on the Alliance Board of Directors.

" This whole deal just gets weirder and weirder. It's really starting to smell bad. Is it possible that this "alliance" would just bleed whatever "free" cash is available and then bail? Surely not. Utilities are Reliant. Er, um I mean reliable. "

" What kind of business was ENRON in? Look how that quickly got swept under the rug so as not to further disrupt the way things really are prefered to work, by those that run them.

Fitting something like this would land right smack in Omega's home town, isn't it? Making a 2 billion dollar money pit, may just get Mattoon more famous than the mad gasser did. "
