Electronic recycling collection planned in Cumberland County Sept. 8

TOLEDO — The Lincoln Heritage Resource Conservation and Development Council, the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Cumberland County Health Department are coordinating an electronic recycling collection on Sept. 8.

They are working with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Recycling for Illinois, Inc., according to a press release.

The collection sites for the e-recycling will be in Neoga across from the fire station on Chestnut Street from 8:30 to 10 a.m.; in Toledo at the USDA-FSA-NRCS-SWCD Service Center parking lot from 10:30 a.m. until noon; and in Greenup behind the Municipal Building (in front of the red brick factory building) on Illinois Street from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

At the collection sites, staff will assist people in getting the items donated to the truck. Later they will be taken to a processing site. There, all items are evaluated with the goal of putting them back into service and/or recycling the components.

Workers at the processing site remove all personal data from each computer, refurbish it, and install a new operating system and office software.

When the equipment is beyond repair or incapable of running the current software, it is recycled. The components are disassembled, collected in separate commodity types and reprocessed so they can become new products.

The goal of the processing is to keep the items out of landfills.

Disposal fees are: $5 for microwaves, $20 if the tube is broken; $5 for computer monitors, plus $20 if the tube is broken; $10 for TVs up to 15 inches, plus $20 if the tube is broken; $20 for TVs up to 27 inches, plus $20 if the tube is broken; $30 for TVs larger than 27 inches, plus $20 if the tube is broken.

All other items are free for recycling, including typewriters, VCRs and similar products.

Plans are to hold a county e-recycling day on the second Tuesday of every other month in Cumberland County. The next one is planned for Nov. 10.

For more information, call the Cumberland County SWCD at 849-2201, ext. 3.
