Second installment of Coles County property taxes due Friday

CHARLESTON — Friday marks the deadline by which Coles County property taxes for 2009 have to be paid without being subject to a penalty.

County Treasurer George Edwards said he wants to remind property owners of the payment due date and the ways the bills can be paid.

Edwards said people who want to bring payments to his office in the courthouse have to do so by the end of the business day at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Payments can also be taken to most banks in the county and will be excepted there until the banks close, he added.

Payment dropoff boxes located on the south side of the courthouse and at Mattoon City Hall will be open for use over the weekend, including Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7. Edwards said any payments collected from the boxes first thing Tuesday morning will be considered on time.

Payments mailed to the treasurer’s office have to be postmarked by Friday to not be considered late, Edwards also said.

A 1½-percent penalty will be added to bills not paid on time. Friday’s payment date is for the second installment on the taxes, half of which were due on June 26.

The Treasurer’s Office Web site lists the payment methods available, including how the bills can be paid using a credit card by phone or online. The site is www.co.coles.il.us/Treasurer and the “real estate taxes” link has the information.
