Rally Sunday kicks off fall programs, potluck at FUMC

MATTOON — Rally Sunday will be Aug. 30 at the First United Methodist Church, 1601 Charleston Ave., Mattoon.

Rally Sunday marks the end of summer and beginning of fall activities at the church.

The church’s hospitality committee will host the second annual “Apple of His Eye” potluck at about 11:45 a.m., following second worship service, which begins at 10:45 a.m.

Meat, drinks and table service will be provided, and families are asked to bring a dish or two to share.

Johnny Appleseed, portrayed by Mike Lockett, will pay a visit to the Fellowship Hall.

Staff changes are: Kim Decker has assumed the role of coordinator of FUMC music programs at the church. She’s been active in the music department for many years. Cathy Kilzer will take the additional role of adult choir director and will lead the Joyful Singers, Chancel Choir and Men of God Choir.

Riley Leitch will serve as the accompanist for the many children’s choirs the church offers. Caleb McGregor, a sophomore music major at Eastern Illinois University, will join the music staff as accompanist for the first service and the adult choirs this fall.

Newly appointed July 1, Pastor Ken Hutchens leads a traditional worship service at 8:15 a.m. and a contemporary worship at 10:45 a.m. each Sunday.

Hutchens came to Mattoon from Countryside United Methodist Church in Urbana. His sermon on Sunday will be titled “Family Feud.”

He will play an active role in helping the church find and hire an associate minister who will work with the youth, children and families of the church.

Activities coming up are: FUMC junior-senior high youth start meeting again at 6 p.m. Sunday, at the church.

On Sept. 2, FUMC’s youth program “Kidz 4 Christ” will have fall registration at Peterson Park, complete with a cookout and miniature golf.

Children’s classes will begin on Sept. 9, with dinner from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and classes until 7 p.m. each Wednesday.

Also this fall, the church has planned to create a new church pictorial directory. Photos will be taken by Life Touch Church Directories on Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 6-7.
