Mattoon golfers are ninth out of 16 teams



MATTOON -- Kris Heller shot a 77 and Jeremy Sparks a career round of 78 leading Mattoon to a tie for ninth among 16 boys’ golf teams at Monday’s Champaign Centennial John Macek Invitational.

“Some of the kids made some strides and played much better than we did last week,” Mattoon coach Bob Lockart said. “For Jeremy Sparks shooting 78, it was a career round for him.”

Effingham St. Anthony won the title by an 11-stroke margin over runner-up Bloomington at the par-72 University of Illinois Blue Course.

Mattoon is to return to the same course for Friday’s 20-team Champaign Central Invitational.
