Two Flowers catering opens daily cafe at Worthington
By ROB STROUD, Staff Writer
CHARLESTON — When Sam Fuller started her Two Flowers catering business in 2006 her ultimate goal was to open a restaurant.
Fuller fulfilled that goal Tuesday with the opening of her Two Flowers cafe at the Worthington Inn, 920 W. Lincoln Ave. The cafe offers breakfast served all day and lunch seven days a week, and will soon offer “Slow Food to Go” with curbside service.
Some of the menu items may be familiar to those who have tried the Third Sunday Brunch that Two Flowers has offered at the Worthington or its catering service.
“There are months when catering is slow, so it will be great to have times when people can have more access to our food,” Fuller said. “We have this space with the restaurant facility here so we decided to put it to use.”
Biscuits with whole wheat gravy, oatmeal or lemon ricotta pancakes, and polenta or porridge hot cereals are part of breakfast menu. These can be combined with eggs, meats, potatoes, and more for a “Build Your Own Breakfast” option. Other items include oven-baked omelets and open-faced sandwiches on grilled batard bread.
The lunch menu includes an “Illinois Blue Salad” with Nauvoo blue cheese crumbles and eight other salads, a pesto mozzarella grilled cheese and 11 other sandwiches, and turkey, garden and buffalo blend burgers. These can be accompanied by sweet potato fries, rotini pasta salad or other sides.
Some of the lunch entrees include seared lime and rosemary encrusted tuna filet served with orzo, bow tie pasta with three sauces tossed with a blend of vegetables and cheeses, and beef loin medallions served over crispy smoked potatoes with a blueberry chutney.
“We will have a set menu, but there will also be a seasonal section we will change out every six to eight weeks or so,” said kitchen manager Karen Pope.
Chocolate or pistachio mousse, bread pudding, brownies and cookies are available for dessert.
Fuller said she plans to start Two Flowers’ menu of “Slow Food to Go,” the opposite of fast food, on Sept. 1.
“It’s well cooked, healthy food for your family that is still a great convenience for you. Just call us by 11 a.m. of the day you need it and then we’ll deliver it to your car under the Worthington awning at your scheduled pick up time between 4:30 and 6:15 pm,” Fuller said.
In addition, Fuller said she plans to open a Petal Room hors d’oeuvres and wine bar Feb. 1 at the Worthington and may eventually offer supper. She said the inn’s banquet space is available free of charge Monday through Thursday for small groups and meetings, in which participants can order off the cafe menu.
Two Flowers cafe is open 6:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday each week. For more information, call the cafe at 348-8161.
