Coed Hair Styling makes a move after 20 years east of Old Main

CHARLESTON — Coed Hair Styling has moved after two decades at its former location but has not gone far from its roots near Eastern Illinois University.

Tina Winnett opened her salon Aug. 4 in the University Village shopping center on Lincoln Avenue directly north of EIU’s Old Main. She previously had operated Coed since 1989 in a converted house at 1503 Seventh St. directly east of Old Main. The salon had been in existence there for at least five years before she became the owner.

“We are happy to make the change. Change is good,” Winnett said.

Winnett said she moved because her lease at 1503 Seventh expired and the converted house there is set to be torn down as part of new commercial development at the southeast corner of Lincoln and Seventh. Her former neighbor landlord, University Baptist Church, has made plans to relocate from this corner to the south side of town.

University Village owner Kirby Johnson and Ed Carter Construction renovated a storefront in this shopping center for Coed’s use with two-and-a-half weeks of notice of her need to move, Winnett said.

“They really worked hard. It’s a new facility. They are to be commended,” Winnett said, adding she has filled this space with a lot of new equipment for her salon.

Winnett said Coed has begun offering manicures and pedicures, services that were not available at the old location. Winnett said she also plans to add body waxing and tanning bed services, noting that the storefront is already wired for tanning beds.

Other services offered by Winnett and stylists Lindsey Pfeiffer and Sarah Poulter include high and low lighting, hair coloring, perms, straightening, up dos, waxing, paraffin waxing, spray gun tanning, and hair and clipper cuts.

The new location has put Coed across the street from Old Main as well as in between Boxa Grinders, Pizza, Wings & More and Positively Fourth Street Records.

“I love the location. We think we will be more visible with the students,” Winnett said.

Coed Hair Styling is open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday each week, or later by appointment. For more information, call the salon at 348-7818.
