Free blues concert set Saturday in Mattoon

MATTOON — The Champaign-based blues band Kilborn Alley will perform a free concert on Saturday at the Rotary Bandshell in Peterson Park.

The concert, which will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m., is sponsored by the Mattoon Arts Council.

The band’s music has been described as “filthy Chicago Blues, with just a little bit of southern fried soul.” They have been compared to blues greats Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Freddie King and Luther Allison.

The band prides itself on playing with spontaneity, stating that that they never play a song the same way twice.

The band was formed in April 2000, when two high school seniors and two friends just out of high school played their first bar gig. By the end of 2005 the band was rehearsing and laying down the tracks for its first Blue Bella release, “Put It In the Alley.”

Other albums have been the self-produced and released “The Kilborn Alley Blues Band,” 2003: “Tear Chicago Down,” 2007; and the soon-to-be released “Better off Now.”

Their honors and awards include being nominated for Best Blues Band and Sean Costello Rising Star Award by the online blues weekly BluesBlast; Best Contemporary Album (“Tear Chicago Down”) and Best New Artist-Debut (“Put It In The Alley”) by The Blues Foundation; and runner-up for Best Contemporary Album (“Tear Chicago Down”) by  BluesCritics.

The band is made up of  Andy Duncanson, Joe Asselin, Josh Stimmel, Chris Breen and Ed O’Hara. For Saturday’s show, Deak Harp will substitute for Asselin on the harmonica.

Kilborn Alley has opened for Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Shemekia Copeland, T-Model Ford, Tommy Castro and Artie “Blues Boy” White.

Those attending Saturday’s concert are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the outdoor concert.
