LETTER: Some 'upbeat thoughts' to brighten the day

GENE BAUER, Mattoon

Let’s look on the bright side for a moment!

It’s not costing anything, really, to print up another trillion dollars worth of paper money, is it? Just the cost of the paper, ink, and time of those in charge.

And just look at how much satisfaction our duly elected officials can get out of throwing it out to us. Like candy to the kids at a street parade. And all we have to do is to crowd to the front and grab it before someone else does. Let’s print some more!

All of us who take one of our daily commuter flights from our local airport to a major international airport can now do so secure in the knowledge that upon return, our local landing pattern will no longer be disputed by any member of the deer family grazing on the runway. (But warn your pilot to not rely upon the altimeter on display in the Terminal building when he comes in for a landing.)

Bagelfest has come and gone with no loss of human life.

Sportsmen’s hunting blinds prohibited on Lake Walmart. Allocation problems solved. Geese pleased.

We, the people of Mattoon, have a front row seat in the drama of “FutureGen.” We can learn first-hand how the game of politics is played. Money is of no object — unless, of course, — when it is.

And if you have been “fired” and out of a job, you will be happy to know that not only locally, but nationwide, walking paths, biking trails, sports stadium, and other forms of fun and relaxation are constantly being built or improved for those moments when you feel the need to play. Be thankful.

Rejoice in the fact that our Constitution permits only one President at a time.

Dodge Grove Cemetery remains undisturbed.

Put your minds to it. I am sure that you all can come up with many more up-beat thoughts to brighten your lives. All is not lost — it just seems that way!

Yours until the next time.

GENE BAUER

Mattoon

Who were the ones telling Seniors that the mean Repulicans are going to take away your Medicare, or school kids they are going to take your lunch away. Which party is always saying, "The earth is heating at alarming rates" and that we will all fry if we don't stop now. As for the, as usual disrespectful, remarks about Palin and Bush. I guess we could change those names to Pelosi, Obama, Hillary, or Bill couldn't we. Then of course when the Republicans were in charge we got, "They will not work with us.", which is Democrat for "We will take our ball and go home." It's say you all can't have a bright day. That usually stems from someones life is so miserable that they can not stand someone being happy. That when they see someone happy with their life they must bring them down to their saddened level. Also it maybe that they are just in such a doom and gloom state of life they can not see any good. It also could be that they see someones happiness as them believing they are better then them and therefore are outraged. I wonder what it is for you three? "
