Slowpitch tourney planned at St. Elmo

ST. ELMO – A slowpitch softball tournament for Classes D, E and Recreational teams is scheduled for Sept. 3-5 at St. Elmo’s Deken Park.

Neoga basketball golf outing is Aug. 15

NEOGA - The Neoga High School boys’ basketball team plans a golf outing for Saturday at Angus Links Golf Course.

The four-man scramble is to begin at 9 a.m.

Cost is $50 per player or $200 for a team.

Included are 18 holes with a cart and lunch. Prizes are to be awarded for first and second places as well as longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt contests.

Snyder Memorial Golf Outing planned

MATTOON – The ninth annual Tony R. Snyder Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 22 at Meadowview Golf Course.

Cost for the four-person, best-ball scramble with a shotgun start is $55 which includes green fees, use of a cart and dinner. Cost for the dinner only is $7 per person.

Proceeds are to help with college expenses for Tony and Angie Snyder’s children.

United Way golf outing set for Sept. 18

MATTOON - United Way of Coles County, Inc. is to hold its annual golf outing on Sept. 18 at Meadowview Golf Course.

All golfers in the four-person scramble have a chance to win cash prizes for a hole-in-one and putting contest.

New this year the outing is to feature women’s, mixed and men’s divisions with prizes awarded for the top finisher in each division sponsored by UPS.

The cost is $85 per golfer, which includes 18 holes of golf, use of a cart, lunch, snacks and drinks. Individuals and teams are welcome.

Players can check-in any time after 10 a.m. on the day of the event.

Lunch is to be served at noon and tee time is set for 1 p.m.

All proceeds from the outing go to fund United Way’s 2009-10 Fund Drive. For more information or to register, contact the United Way office at 234-8022 or email unitedway@consolidated.net.

 

Coffey Memorial race planned at Ashmore

ASHMORE – The inaugural Ashmore Day Kenneth Coffey Senior Memorial race is scheduled for Aug. 22.

The event includes a 5,000-meter run, a 1.5-mile walk and kids fun run and is to start at the Ashmore Community Center at 8 a.m. with the Kids race for ages 10-and-under. The 5K and 1.5-mile walk are set for 8:30 a.m.

Registration is 7-8 a.m.

Cost is $20 if preregistered before Aug. 14 and includes a T-Shirt.

Half-marathon planned at Effingham

EFFINGHAM – The Broken Arrow Road Runners’ Heartland Half-Marathon race is scheduled for Sept. 13.

The 13.1-mile course starts and ends at Effingham High School and winds through parts of Effingham city and county.

A 5,000-meter run/walk (3.1 miles) is also offered with all runners to finish at the high school track.

Registration is open for the event either by mail or online at www.runeffingham.com.

Heartland Dental Care is the sponsor with proceeds to go to the Unit 40’s mentoring program.

 

Charleston JFL discount cards available

CHARLESTON – Discount cards sold by the Charleston Junior Football League go on sale this weekend.

The cards cost $10 each and have 39 businesses coving Mattoon and Charleston businesses including pizzas, tanning, trees service, landscaping, Longaberger baskets, Avon, scrap booking, oil changes, produce from the local market in Charleston, Mexican places, hair salons, free coffee at breakfast, golfing, miniature golfing, computer repair and a local flower shop.

You can get your CJFL card from any Charleston JFL player and or cheerleader or by calling Sarah Taflinger at 294-3523.

All proceeds go to support CJFL football and its new football field.

 

Olympic swimmer coming to Sullivan

SULLIVAN – Olympic swimming gold medalist Matt Grevers is to be at Sullivan for the Oct. 4 Swim Champions Fitter and Faster Tour.

Grevers won golds in the 2008 Olympics by swimming in preliminary heats of the 4x100-meter freestyle and the backstroke in the 4x100 medley relay with the U.S. going on to win the finals in those events.

He also took the silver medal in the 100 backstroke.

At Lake Forest High School he set IHSA records and then won four NCAA championships at Northwestern.

Cost for the three-hour session at the Sullivan Civic Center is $75.

The clinic is to start at 9 a.m. with a session for Masters to start at 1 p.m.

Charleston Soccer League has U12, U14 openings

CHARLESTON - The Charleston Soccer League still has spots available on its CFC 12-and-under and U14 teams for the 2009-2010 season.

Teams typically practice twice a week and travel a total of three to four Sundays from the end of August through the end of October.

CFC is the competitive level of soccer governed by the Charleston Soccer League and provides area youth with personal development through soccer education and skill development.

Director of coaching, Dino Raso, who is Eastern Illinois University men’s soccer assistant coach, and technical advisor, Adam Howarth, who is EIU’s head men’s coach, supervise coaching by college-level players and mentors as well as the competitive structure of each age bracket.

Olney Fall Baseball League planned

OLNEY - The ninth annual Olney Central College Baseball Fall League/Camp is scheduled to begin with an open workout and registration at 3 p.m. Aug. 29 at Dennis Conley Field.

The five-week camp is open to high school freshmen through seniors emphasizes improvement through fundamentals and playing in game situations. The staff is to include college coaches and players as well as professional scouts and players.

Games are to be played the following Sundays - Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 with rain dates of Oct. 3 and 4.

Players may sign up individually or with a team. Campers are to be kept together whenever possible.
