LETTER: Sidewalk needed for school bus pickup

BUD BIGGS, Charleston

Bravo Charleston! Let’s talk “no sidewalks” on Reynolds Drive between Lincoln Street and Polk Ave. Many places you must step off the road into a ditch, but in one place (40 feet long) there is nothing but a narrowly tarred road with deep ravines on both sides.

Want to hear something sickening? A mother with a twin baby carriage got caught in the middle of this. The car behind and in front of her stopped while she proceeded (thanks drivers)! You say, “Come on, ol’ man,why are you complaining?”

Well, I have for the last six years, but now my grandchild is assigned to walk this route to catch her school bus. I know for sure the city planners and school superintendent’s children don’t travel this route or it would have been corrected long ago.

You know what? It probably won’t be until someone gets hurt or killed—then a smart attorney with a $50 million law suit gives them a choking effect.

Thanks for allowing me to air my feelings.

BUD BIGGS

Charleston

" Good letter, Mr Biggs!

I travel that area often, & there are alot of walkers along there, not to mention the children who go to the school bus pick up point, early in the morning.

It would be in the best interest for the city to do something with that section of roadway, or perhaps even fill in those ravines.

I, myself, have walked that stretch, & have had to do "the hustle" to get out of the way for cross traffic.

Perhaps if the city is not able to contend with such a large project, maybe some smaller section of sidewalks could be installed, along with small foot bridges, if the ravines are really that needed there. "

" A suggestion: homeowners put walking blocks in front of lots for walkers and then no problems then. Make the property more adaptable and nobody walking thru the mud and mire.
Walking blocks arent that much. We had to put down own in the small town live in because walks put in were put by the original homeowners and needed replaced.
Same with the rural mailboxes, we have to buy our own posts, boxes, but that is ok. Takes about 20 minutes with the mix and pour concrete. I expect the area has to clean out the ditches of trash too, am I correct? "

" Suggested the in front of houses as that is what had to do in Missouri home or never been done. Kids were always dodging around. Then 10 houses went together built a three sided shelter with some benches each side and along the back, room overhead for supplies.
FOUND good lumber at the local dumpsite
there to build things. A little paint and it looked nice. EVEN had leftover roofing from jobs locally but looked like had it built.
I would gladly made some goodies for them if lived closer. Maybe some other industrious person do that since MAMA has pretty much RETIRED. SAD when become an ole fxxt. hehe. "

" Mama I think its great you're so willing to help others. Bless you for that. I think that the sidewalks are a good idea. Can I ask a stupid question why is there no "city run" buses here? I don't know if the Dial a Ride counts as one, but I don't think I've ever seen a town where there is no "public transportation" could solve a lot of problems with people walking along ditches and busy highways if there was a city bus and it was affordable. Just a thought. "
