LETTER: Top Bagelfest bands should be country

MR. AND MRS. MIKE HARMON, Louisville

This is in reference to “Aunt objects to band’s behavior at Bagelfest.” My husband and I totally agree. We also saw the show and paid for it. We saw kids being shoved by adults drinking.

“Entertainment” like Zac Brown Band is not country. We feel the music was very much reggae/pop rock/soul than country. When ordering our tickets, we were told, “great country music.”

We also spent $75 and left before the only song we wanted to hear, “Chicken Fried.” Too bad that “Bagelfest” has changed. We traveled 45 minutes each way and have for several years, but after this disappointment, unless “Bagelfest” changes, we will not continue.

We bought these tickets three months ahead. I feel the tourism committee needs to give the public a chance to vote on entertainment. For example three choices of country music.

Maybe have a phone line like one for Rodney Atkins, two for Ashton Sheppard or even three for Wade Hayes. Maybe have it so no one has to answer the phone, just call in and say “one,” “two” or “three” and take the top choice for the night of “country music.”

The night before was the Neville Band out of Chicago. We feel the next night should continue to be country.

In the past, we saw Steve Warner, Tracy Byrd (two times), Gary Allen. At the park Josh Turner, Blake Shelton, Oak Ridge Boys, Roy Clark, to name a few.

We agree the “tourism committee” needs to consider to keep Bagelfest clean and family geared. Or maybe not have this event at all.

MR. AND MRS. MIKE HARMON

Louisville

" Seriously?! Here we go again! Haha!

I guess since a some people weren 't happy, we should cave and bend to their every wim. What would you have done if the community did vote for The Zac Brown Band? Would you still be complaining? I would guess probably so.

Just as with Ms. Bean, how much did you know about the band? I'm guessing not much. Quit complaining about your loss of money, and disappointing time, if you didn't know what you were getting yourself into. It must be nice to be able to find someone else to blame every time something doesn't go your way, or you don't like the way something turns out. It must be really nice to not have to take responsibility for your own actions! "

They do great ZZ Top stuff, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Delbert McClinton just to name a few. Also they can play just about anything per request and do it well! Shoot! I heard them pull "Spooky" out of the hat awhile back and they hadn't played it in about 20 years they said. They NAILED it! These guys are versatile and inventive! I love the way they take an old song, tweak it and come up with their own version of it! Fabulous musicians! "

My opinion was the band had no business on the main stage. They belonged in the beer tent. And if you hire someone without setting guidelines or rules you are gonna get burned. I want them to stand up and say ok fine they did cuss not stand behind the words being non cuss words! " I hate to break it to those who say the Zac Brown Band isnt country, but if youll take at look at the country chart, youll see their album at #2. And if you look back, youll see that Chickenfried, and Whatever It Is were on the country chart, as singles. And that their new single, Toes also happens to land on the country chart. Not to mention the fact that about 6,500 county fans filled Grimes Field to see them perform.

County is not what it was, but thats okay, because if you look around, thats the norm. Do you still see tv shows like Father Knows Best? No. NOTHING is as it was. I used to play Pong on an Atari video game and thought it was the greatest thing ever. Now, my kids are playing video games that look like real life.

Perhaps Brad Paisleys new song will shed some light on our present situation. Its called Welcome to the Future. In it, he talks about his grandpa writing letters to his grandma while stationed overseas. And today, he (Brad) had a video chat with a company in Tokyo. We ARE here, whether you are ready or not. Things change, and we have to deal with it. Not to say you have to change who you are, but as a business owner, I know that you have to change the way you operate in order to appeal to the masses. Where was twitter last year? Who would have ever thought that reality shows would dominate your television?

As far as the voting on Bagelfest entertainment is considered, thats okay to an extent. However, Im pretty sure they work on a budget, and most people would probably vote on big name acts that tourism couldnt afford without raising prices. And honestly, Wade Hayes? He hasnt had a hit in 15 years, and only had about two that I even remember. If we could free him from his shift at Wal-Mart, Ill bet hed do it for $50!! Also, Ashton Sheppard was here last year, for what its worth.

Regarding your $75.00 that was wasted, Im wondering what you would have spent to see the Zac Brown Band at a place like Assembly Hall. They would have been opening act for a top name performer, and cheap seats would have been about $50.00 each. Consider how the Bagelfest people keep the prices down before you cast stones. And besides, you know Chickenfied is the top song, and if youve ever been to a concert I assume since youre such an expert on music that you have you know WHEN THEY DO THEIR BIGGEST HIT!

Now, Donnas turn

You made things personal, so deal with the letters. You opened yourself up to being judged, so either handle it or crawl back into your little hole never to be heard from again. Yes, you do live in the USA, and youre free to voice your opinion I would never deny you that, but to say the band had no business on the main stage is ridiculous. Again, I go back to the thousands of people who came to the show, and the hundreds who stuck around to get pictures and autographs who felt that they DID belong. It was, by far, the biggest crowd ever at Bagelfest. Have you even listened to their album? I assume since your nieces are big fans, you have. The words on stage were no different that the words on their album. And furthermore, as a responsible aunt you must know that some of the most popular country songs deal with cheating and drinking. So I ask you: Whats worse, hearing those, or letting them hear a** and son of a b****?
I would rather they call someone an s-o-b than to cheat on their spouse when they grow up and get married. Just my 2 cents.

As an attendee at the show, I must say that these were some of the greatest players Ive ever heard, and Ive heard MANY. You just have to get past the words and soak up the experience. Your nieces have heard worse, Im sure. I commend the tourism committee on their choice. Like I said earlier things are not like they used to be, and we have to come to terms with that. Have you heard Tim McGraws song, Things Change? Might want to listen to it.

Remember, Change is the only constant. "

" The only thing is not everyone likes country music. The only country I really listen to is "crossover country" the type they play on the top 40 stations such as Taylor Swift. If we have a ballot with 3 choices then lets allow there to be 3 types of music there are more genres than country. There is bluegrass, r&b, rock, classic rock, motown type music, 50's/60's music top 40, pop, etc etc...

Why not give our local bands a chance to shine?? I know there are lots of area bands that are wonderfully talented. I must say I do like the ballot idea though that way the public gets a chance to vote on who the band is. ( though I'm sure someone will still complain) Maybe even just to ensure that everyone can attend we have a "children's performer" during the day and the music for the adults at night. Just to be diplomatic. "

Billie Brant wrote on Aug 3, 2009 3:24 PM:

" You know folks, there's all kinds of "country music" from bluegrass, tradtional country, county rock and today's country. There's enough variety to satisfy everyone. Personally I don't care much for some of the "new sounds" and artists, but that's just my personal taste. I do however like some of it.

My feeling is a steel guitar or fiddle lick "thrown in" does not a "country song make". This attempt to validate it as country falls short in my book. That's not to say some of the music isn't good, I just feel it's "LA" not Nashville. I feel there are too many "cookie cutter" types being hyped. I prefer someone with a unique sound, one who is easily recognizable the second a sound comes out of their mouths.

I really don't see why the main stage act ALWAYS has to be country. I like Rock too. I don't see why some good old R @ R couldn't be featured.

If we would look in just a fifty mile radius from Charleston or Mattoon, we would see an amazing array of talented performers. Our "own" Jackie Lawson is one of them. That young lady can sing anything! This area is RICH with talent! All kinds of music is represented. I always say we've got it covered from Bach to Bluegrass!

I like a bunch of different kinds of music. Big Bands, jazz, country, blues, classical just to name a few. Oh yeah, barbershop too! :-) It's fun to sing! While some of these genre's might not appeal to everyone and they are definatly not what Baglefest is looking for, there are plenty of good groups and solo acts that would fill the bill.

I just saw Lyle Lovett at the Rosebud a couple of weeks ago and he was dyn-o-mite! Lyle would probably be too expensive to bring to Bagelfest though.

Not everyone is going to be happy no matter who is on the stage. Suck it up and wait until there's someone YOU want to see and then go. If you don't like who's going to be there, don't go.

By the way, I like the Zac Brown band. "

Wow! I think that's a little more than your "two cents!!!" I think you owe Donna about a buck fifty plus an apology! How hateful can you be-and over an opinion?!

Donna-I wasn't in total agreement with your letter, however, I did appreciate your concern for your nieces impressionable young minds. There doesn't seem to be alot of people willing to stick to their convictions these days and remember that there really is NO GOOD REASON to intentionally expose children to things that we believe are adult themed. I love it when people say "they have heard it already, at school, public etc, so you might as well get used to it." Yea, lets confirm to our children what we feel is questionable by showing an attitude of "oh well, I give up" and bring into & allow it in our kids lives anyway. Like we don't have the backbone to keep it at least out of our homes or the things we choose to participate in. No wonder there are so many kids that are disrespectful and question authority-it's because they think we are all full of crap! I think kids nowadays are STARVING for someone to show them what it means to live by their own beliefs and mean it, as opposed to giving in and going with the flow-no matter what your beliefs. There is a sense of security for children in seeing a parent or some other adult close to them doing the right thing and having the fortitude to stand firm when the chance to give in arises. In this case it sounds like your nieces were already famaliar with the music and the lyrics, so I guess that will have to be their parents responsibilty to regulate what they listen to. I don't have a problem with the Zac Brown band, but I would advise checking into any future events you might like to enjoy with them. Kudos for wanting to spend time with your nieces and caring about what activities you attend together!
More than ever, children need positive adult role models that care about their best interests. If it's a family member that is even better! Your nieces will respect you in the years to come, and look to you as someone they trust for solid advice. :)

And yes Donna, you should be able to state your opinion without being ridiculed. People contradict themselves when they post about how everyone should quit their whining and keep their opinions to themselves, when that is exactly what they are doing...stating their opinions!

Sheesh, ease up people, live and let live! "

Billie Brant wrote on Aug 4, 2009 8:39 AM:

" Granted TQ, there is an element of Country Music that's pure twang and meant to be that way, some of it for pure fun. BUT, there's also some music that's very beautiful with lyrics that can melt a heart. Many tell a story or express the deepest feelings of love, despair and sometimes pure joy we experience.

Writers such as Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams Sr, Willie Nelson, and others have written classics that have been recorded by many artists. Many of these artits were not in the Counrty Musio field at all, but recognized a good song no matter where it came from. Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Harry Connick Jr, just to name a few.

As a matter of fact James Taylor who is known for his unique style for writing and performing has an album out now called "Covers". The songs on this albim are songs he's performed in concert but never recorded. He included several "Country" songs on this album. 'Wichita Lineman" recorded by Glen Campbell, "Why Baby Why"by George Jones, "Some Days You Gotta Dance", by the Dixie Chicks and a haunting song called "Seminole Wind" which was done by John Anderson.

The Kennedy Center For the Performing Arts has bestowed honors on several Country music artists actually ALLOWING them to sit alongside artists from movies, theatre, dance, the operatic world in a place of honor. How about "them apples" TQ?

Many artists from other musical genre's recogize just how talent "country pickers" are! I recall seeing Manhattan Transfer, the terrific jazzy vocal grup, include Ricky Skaggs playing with them. Ya don't get more county than Ricky! The Beatles were influenced by country artists. Buddy Emmons, the greatest steel guitar EVER, recorded a kick-butt jazz album with top shelf jazz musicians from New York several years ago. ZZ Top are BIG country music fans. So was Ray Charles. His album of Country songs back in the 60's was an astronomical hit! He took a huge chance in recording this album. He was advised against it because "they" thought it would ruin his career. WRONG! Ray stuck to his guns because he KNEW how good these songs were!

CMT has a show called Crossroad Country where country artists and artists from other fields perform together. Check it out.

Johnny Cash was respected by artists from many venues.

Great players and singers are just that! Get your snobby nose out of the clouds and listen, really listen. Listen to some of the "hot" players and wonderful singers out there.Try opening your mind to it and you just might find something that's pleasing even to your elite ears. "

He mentioned none of that, nor did he say anything that even remotely suggested lack of respect for one's elders, as you claim he revealed. Take a deep breath, dear, or go back on your meds.

And these forums aren't just about people who agree with you. Nearly everyone who posts on here knows that to express an opinion means you open yourself up to opposition. No one's attempting to take away your First Amendment rights, though you seem outraged that those who disagree with you are exercising their own First Amendment rights. Heck, the back-and-forth comments are the purpose of the forum, aren't they? People should discuss the topic of discussion because it doesn't matter about who belongs to who or how much money one makes it matter about the topic...and the topic is and was and forever will be the zac brown band and bagelfest. "

" "Heck, the back-and-forth comments are the purpose of the forum, aren't they?"

Actually the purpose of the forum is to allow the public state one's opinion, not a platform for debate. However, I have to agree that comparing differences in opinions does make the forum more interesting as long as it is done in a respectful manner. It amazes me how people seem to relish in using insulting, condenscending rebuttals to someone else's views, then turn right around and preach about 'people's rights to express themselves' What hyprocrites! Sure, go ahead express your rights, and let others feel free to do so as well without being picked apart. It seems some poeple are so self righteous that they feel you have "the right" to degrade another just because they don't express themselves in the way you feel is correct. I can't see where Ms Bean has said anything wrong except ask that she be given the oppurtunity to relay her opinion without being personally attacked. We ALL deserve that. People nowadays seem to have the distorted mind set that it is there job to remind others that they are some how an idiot or "need to go back on your meds" if they don't go with the flow. That is elementary school mentality if you ask me! Kind of like the school yard bully picking on one kid and all the little 'followers' jumping in on the assault like a pack of wolves. Grow up people! No wonder are kids are out of control, they see adults condoning this type of behavior with their own actions and words.

"All I know is that it's much more entertaining to read strong, even sometimes-obnoxious opinions that it is to read a thread where everyone agrees and basically does the verbal equivalent of holding hands and singing Kumbaya. Boring! "

As far as that comment...I guess that depends on your idea of entertainment. I find exchanging differences of opinion in an intelligent and respectful manner without involving personal, irrelavent insults, is much more enjoyable not mention relaxing form of entertainment. Like I mentioned though, it does take a certian amount of intellect, and I don't think some people are interested in the effort.
I have found the Jerry Springer type entertainment is just a little too 'back woods' and not my cup of tea. Sorry about that. "

The buttons on my car radio are set to a couple of country stations, a couple of oldies rock and one is set to a classical station out of Champaign. My ex husband has toured with several famous acts for years, as a percussionist and I had the oppurtunity to be around all kinds of musicians of different styles. I intend to go out and listen to more music, now that I'm on the mend and feeling better.

I agree with you on Michael Buble Pumpkinseed. He's on my "bucket list" of performers to see. He is a terrific singer and performer. My 21 year old granddaughter is nutty about him, Harry Connick Jr and Dean Martin! This is a kid who likes all that stuff most kids her age like, but she also "hears outside the box" and is open to other kinds of music. She likes Vince Gill(me too) and many other Country artists.Having a grandma who sang and played in several bands with some fabulous musicians, she was exposed at an early age to music.

Music to me is almost as necessary as the air I breathe to live. This old world would be a dreary place without it. I miss "gigging", but my friends still let the old girl sit in now and then.

By the way Pumpkinseed, I like the Peruvian Indian music with what my friend Scurv calls "face flutes" or "pan flutes" along with guitars and various stringed insruments. Wonderful stuff. Very rhythmic.

So enjoy the music of YOUR choice folks. There's plenty of variety out there. "

Uhm....Billie? I never said anything about the person in Peru being Harry's son or playing the sax and keyboards. You might want to reread my post.

Both of these posts were from you.

Now 7X, just who was this supposed to refer to if not HP's son? Why would you ask him such questions with one post refering to a person playing the sax and keyboard in one of them and the next a reference to Peru. You know what? I may not be on your intellectual level which is far superior to mine, but I'm not a complete idiot either. I can add one and one and come up with two. This crapola with the sax, keyboards and the "Peru" reference was very transparent. The second I read the one about the person in Peru, I knew who that individual was and he was NOT HP's son!

I'm going to "give" you the one on the boring veterans stories. Since I don't keep dossier's on everyone I may be mistaken on that one. I do recall that it was posted about the time all this silliness about "who is who" was going on. Really when you come down to it, who gives a rats behind who anyone is?

I'm pretty good at picking out writing styles too. Use that little bit anyway you choose.

I'm usually not in the habit of insulting anyone on here. Oh yes, I have used some zingers now and then. I'll admit that. Most of them are pretty tame compared to some I've read. It's not that I'm not capable of it. I'm no "Goody Two Shoes". I just choose not to get down and dirty here.
I don't recall EVER calling you a b@st*rd or son-of-a-b*&^#. Pup, maybe when I was trying to inject a little levity into a situation that was getting mean.

I just wish WE could ALL stick more to the point and leave this silliness in the background. For crying out loud, just because someone cracks an insult, it has to turn into a weeks worth of back and forth oneupmenship. Fire one back and let it go! I'm sure there will be ample opportunities on later threads for more "one liners". Actually some of them are pretty funny, on both sides even though I don't agree with the comment sometimes. Geez! We all need to lighten up!

You may want to know that I actually agree with the content of many of your posts. It's when they go off the deep end and you seem more intent on showing your "J. Edgar Hoover-like" penchant for getting even with those who disagree with you that I back off.

I like HP. It's as simple as that. I don't agree with a lot of his political views and he knows that. Still, he doesn't find it necessary to put me down because of it, or I him. We agree to disagree.

I have no control with what you decide to do or say in regard to what I've said. I've tried to be as clear and honest as I can be on how I feel about this. I can't do anymore. "

" No Billie, I was not referring to the same person in those two separate statements. However, I was clearly mistaken because I was under the impression that it was indeed two different individuals- who were related. But I have since discovered that I was wrong about that.

But wouldn't you just know it Bille, the person who I suspect is our beloved friend, just magically shows up at the coffee shop this morning after being absent for almost two entire months, when he had his little public meltdown.

Now ain't that just a kick in the pants? Of course he didn't stay long. The conversation turned harshly anti-Obama and (our friend?) beat a hasty retreat for the door.

Oh well- I guess I could be wrong about his identity and I certainly hope that I am. Because our HP friend in here has engaged in enough character assassination against local individuals- by name (spreading rumors and innuendo) that it could have serious legal and business implications if his true identity were ever revealed. And that is exactly why I would never divulge his name in here. I wouldn't want to be the cause any harm towards his business or his reputation.

Oh and one minor thing Billie- I have never regarded you as anything less than my intellectual equal, and often, my superior. In fact, there have been numerous times that you have been able to cut through the BS and blast right through to the heart of an issue- in ways that I simply can't. And you tend to do it with the force of a Howitzer. Or in your case Billie- an M48A3 with it's 90mm cannon. Yes I'm a bit of tank fan- especially WWII Panzers.

One thing's for certain Billie- I always stop to read your posts. Feel free to blast me whenever you think I need it (and I know you will). I'll always give you a free pass, because no matter what your feelings are towards me- I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for you Billie. That's just the way it is........ "

I don't quite "get this" 7X. If HP has engaged in serious character assassinations( I don't believe that for a minute) in a public place he's already known by his real name to the public. He would be putting himself in a position of legal ramifications would he not by doing this?

OR did I misread this post of yours? Did you mean he's done that only on here? I have a hard time believing that someone who's done this kind of thing on here would find it difficult to stifle the urge not to let it fly anywhere they go.

I've seen him "stick" a few on here usually with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, but character assassinations? Don't think so. Granted he can get a ittle acerbic, but no more than some of our other "friends" on here. I've also read his apologies when he's misjudged a post.

I do know he can have a very soft heart. Sorry if I ratted you out on that HP. :-)All one has to do is read some of his posts concerning kids and others who have suffered through some kind of tragedy. I know this even more since I've spoken to him personally. All of you know he's contacted me per phone by now. Still, I wouldn't know him if I passed him on the street.

Let's face it. You two guys can't stand the "sight" of each other. Simple as that.

Thanks for your kind words toward me. I appreciate them, but you have to realize that HP is my friend and always will be whether or not we agree on some matters. "

Yep, mainly in here, Billie. But last year, the person I'm thinking of, just happened to mention some of this hearsay at the little coffee klatch, and wouldn't you just know it- bingo- there's our friend posting it in here a few hours later. Could be another coincidence I suppose. And this was mainly rumors and gossip about the personal lives of several people running for local offices in Coles county. And as I recall some of it was quite harsh. Also- the person I'm thinking of is quite pleasant- usually. But he can also snap. And he did so quite publicly over national politics. In fact, the entire place came to a stand still as the voices became louder. But again- I could be confusing two different people. Still....it's odd that a certain individual returned to coffee today after two long months and right in the middle of this little tiff. Ah well.....maybe it's HP's twin. heh.

But let be clear here Billie- I do not hate HP. In fact, we probably have more in common than not. And I realize that HP is your friend and I respect that. I simply wanted to emphasize to you that I am not your enemy, Billie. I had nothing to do with dragging you into this ridiculousness, and in the end, your just wasting friendly fire on me. But- we're all grownup's in here (even though we don't always act like it) and this is all much ado about nothing- isn't it. "

" 7X- Supposition can be a dangerous thing. Assumptions can get us in big- azzed trouble. Been there done that more often than I care to admit. Since you also "suppose" you might be thinking of a different person as you stated " But again- I could be confusing two different people", wouldn't it be better to err on the side of caution instead of assuming it was HP? There are any number of folks out there who probably share his views on politics. Stranger coincidences have happend than ......"Still....it's odd that a certain individual returned to coffee today after two long months and right in the middle of this little tiff." Sounds like a classic case of supposition to me here 7X.

That "ain't guilty' beyond a reasonable doubt to me. Why in the world would a smart guy like HP show up and "prove" to you he's the loose cannon you referred to during this tiff as you call it, after he's stated he only uses Mickey D's drive through for his coffee needs. It doesn't compute.

So, I'll accept your statement that you are not my enemy. Thanks for respecting that HP is my friend. He is that. Or as they said in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", he's "bonafide" to me. "
