Mattoon man indicted for failing to register as sex offender

SPRINGFIELD — Edward Bryan Gray Jr., 29, of Mattoon was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury with violation of the federal Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

The indictment alleged that from April 17 through May 14, Gray failed to register and to update registration as a sex offender after leaving Illinois to travel to Iowa.

Gray was convicted in December 2000 in Iowa for indecent contact with a child, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The new indictment is the result of an investigation by the Mattoon Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service. If convicted, Gray could receive a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. On Tuesday, Gray remained in custody in Coles County.
